Course Overview & Requirements MATH 70 & 97

This first 3 days only, please sign the appropriate attendance roster near the door. If you are on a wait list, please keep coming each day and sign the roster. I’ll be able to tell you on the 3 rd day if you can get in.

Primary “instructor” : the Hawkes computer courseware NOT a distance education class rather a “hybrid” course All assignments and tests: completed on the computer. No lectures, but I can assist if you need help.

While there are deadlines for assignments and tests, students find this format a bit more flexible. All work except TESTS can be done at home or on other campus computers. It is a good way to review materials that you learned in the past.

Many students are more successful in a structured, lecture environment. While there is an instructor available to help, you are responsible for learning the material via computer courseware. There are no scheduled lectures.

You like learning on your own. The material you are learning is, for the most part, a review of material you have had in the past but have forgotten. You are VERY self-motivated.

Wrong course? Is the material too easy or too hard? Please see me. Lecture course better? Check immediately for any open sections and make the change. (Unfortunately, by the time the quarter starts, many courses are already full.) More information about math placement and Sample Entrance Exams? Please visit: http://www.instruction.greenriver.edu/DIV-Math/Advising/default.htm

Attendance the first full week is REQUIRED. After week 1 only required attendance is for TESTS. TESTS must be taken in class during your scheduled class time. Attendance is NOT part of your grade.

All lessons, pre-tests and tests may be taken early! Pre-tests must be completed before midnight on the due day. Tests must be taken in class!

Room available during your scheduled class time. Classes are scheduled in this room at 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 a.m. and at 1:00 p.m. and on Mondays and Wednesday, 2 – 6:50 PM. If not a test day, there may be room for you to use the computers outside your class time. Other computers on campus have access to Hawkes including the Math Learning Center (CH 313), the Tech Center (2 nd floor) & the Library.

Pencil or pen. Spiral notebook to take notes and to work problems. Calculator MATH 62 & 70, a scientific calculator MATH 72 & 97 a graphing calculator (TI 83, 83+ or 84) Memory Stick (optional) to save Access Code (Please name your memory stick with your name and write your name on it as well.)

Purchase options for Hawkes Learning Systems courseware

Options are listed from most expensive to least: Book & Software (CD) @ GRCC bookstore. Software Only (CD) @ GRCC bookstore. Software Only Online: www.hawkeslearning.com NOTE: If you took a Hawkes HYBRID course this year there is no need to purchase the software again!

Developmental Mathematics, D. Franklin Wright

Most students DO NOT use the textbook. Some students find it an excellent supplement, especially when if a computer is not available. If you purchase the software online, you DO NOT get the CDs. The CDs contain live video segments that some students find helpful. You can view the videos online.

Make sure you purchase the CORRECT courseware- DEVELOPMENTAL MATHEMATICS

If you purchased the CD, you will install the software from the CD once you have obtained your Access Code online. If you purchased your Access Code online, you need to download the software from www.hawkeslearning.com

Most choose STUDENT INSTALL. The Service Pack option is to upgrade a version. Choosing the option with the Audio & Video files takes up to an hour to download. (Note: watch the lessons online.)

CAMPUS: START MENU to ALL PROGRAMS to Hawkes Learning folder. HOME: Once the software is installed, click on the Hawk icon you will see on your desktop or under ALL PROGRAMS in the START MENU.

The very first time, you will need to type your access code in the box provided, or copy (CTR+C) and paste (CTR+V) into the box. After typing it, you should SAVE it to your hard drive or a memory stick, so that next time you can choose LOAD FROM FILE. Name the file something like “MATH 62 Access Code”. It will give the file a “.cod” file extension.

On campus, save your Access Code to your Home Drive. (H: drive, the one with your SID#) Every GRCC student has a home drive space accessible anywhere on campus. When you browse for your H: drive, look for your Student #. As a backup, if you cannot find your Access Code, I can look it up for you.

At home, you will be asked to enter your HLS Course ID as shown here:
