1 Mason County (New Haven and Wahama High) Year 1 Results May 2012 NDPC SD and WVDE

2 BASELINE DATA What stood out in the data probes worksheets as areas for improvement for students with IEPs?

3 Baseline Data Details We wanted to look at SWD at New Haven Elementary and Wahama High School who had excessive absences and failing grades. Secondly, we wanted to look at truancy rates and poor school experience as reported on dropout reports.

6 GOALS OUTCOMES EVALUATION What we did and our results

7 Goal 1: Students will have increased academic success as seen by no failing grades and increased Westest scores.

8 Goal 1 Data Targets Increased classroom grades Decreased zeros in grade book

9 Goal 1 Strategies Increase effective co-teaching opportunities in academic areas through teacher co-teacher training delivered through RESA II Student with disabilities will participate in the ZAP (zeros aren’t permitted) program.

10 Goal 1 Implementation Steps Special education department set up trainings at New Haven Elementary on effective co- teaching with Eugena Dameron from RESA II. Follow up visits were also included following training. Schools implemented the ZAP program school wide.

11 Goal 2: Students will feel a greater engagement with high school and graduation by being linked with caring committed staff.

12 Goal 2 Data Targets Reduced dropout rates and increased school satisfaction as determined by student senior exit surveys.

13 Goal 2 Strategies Students will be matched with a case manager to mentor and assist them throughout the school year.

14 Goal 2 Implementation Steps At both schools, student were linked to a case manager to help guide, assist, track, and mentor students with disabilities throughout the school year.

15 RESULTS What are our results at the end of one year? Where do we stand now with our progress? What conclusions have we identified?

16 Goal 1 Results More effective co-teaching began to take place. Reduced numbers of students in a resource room for their core subjects.

17 Goal 2 Results Wahama High School had 2 SWD dropout and both of those were before 8/30/11.

18 NEXT STEPS What do we do next year? What does our future hold?

19 Next Steps and Plans for the Future We need to better implement the co-teaching model with more General Education buy in and Special Education participation. We want to continue to increase SWD attendance rates, especially at the high school level (New Haven Elementary had a NCLB attendance rate of 99.63% for 2010-11). We want to lower inappropriate behavior in the SWD population through increased contact time and better academic engagement. We are looking to increase the SWD graduation rate at Wahama High School – currently 60%.
