2 What is Debate? Debate: to engage in argument by presenting opposing points. Formal Debate: a type of reasoned argument between parties, which is used in school contests

3 The Opposing Sides Affirmative : the side that agrees with the topic being debated. Negative : the side that attacks the affirmative position/argues against the topic. Within a debate, the 2 sides do not directly talk back and forth at all times. They may only do this during Cross Examination. –Cross Examination is the time for questioning an opponent on the topic being debated.

4 Preparing Focus on the issues: –Major points in a debate Build a case: –a team’s set of arguments in a debate.

5 Comm Apps Debate Everyone will have a debate partner (unless there is an odd number of students, then a person will be asked to go “Maverick”, which means alone). Each team will debate against another team on a given topic Each debate will last 13 minutes long

6 Comm Apps Debate Format 2 minutes for AFF 1 minute for CX 3 minutes for NEG 1 minute for CX 3 minutes for AFF 1 minute for CX 2 minutes for NEG AFF= Affirmative Team NEG= Negative Team CX= Cross Examination (questioning)

Get in the pool Drink from the toilet

8 Topic Draft Teams will draw a number Teams will pick topic choice and side (aff or neg) according to number order Debates will occur as posted on the bracket
