Miss Russell 1

What was the main issue with research and theory into relationship breakdown that we looked at last lesson? Why is this an issue?

Thinking Ladder…

How will I know if I am learning? By the end of the lesson… E Will be able to describe Lee’s Model of Dissolution. C Will be able to explain the stages of Lee’s Model of Dissolution. A Will be able to compare and contrast Lee’s Model with Duck’s Model.

 Lee in 1984 devised a model of relationship dissolution which was based on his study of premarital breakdown.  After surveying 112 romantic break- ups, he suggested that such relationships went through five distinct stages.

Draw a comic strip to represent the transition through relationship breakdown according to Lee.

 One partner becomes unhappy with the relationship.

 One partner reveals their unhappiness to the other

 Discussions take place about the unhappiness

 Attempts may be made to resolve the problems

 This is where the relationship breaks down

 The difference between Lee’s model and Duck’s model is that: Lee puts emphasis on the earlier stages (when the relationship might be saved), while Duck puts emphasis more on the beginning and end stages rather then the middle of the process.  The main similarity between Lee’s Model and Duck’s Model is:

Topic 03- Dissolution of Relationships: Lesson 08 23

 The weakness of both these models is that they cannot be applied universally.  There are many kinds of relationships and they are all different and don’t necessarily bear a resemblance to each other as they can go through the stages at different speeds.  The theories are also ethnocentric as the theories apply more to the western culture (individualistic) rather than non-westernised cultures ( collectivist etc.)  They also don’t describe why breakdown occurred. But instead, are very descriptive. Put together a paragraph on how the model is nomothetic…Unsure? Work together! What is Nomothetic?

What is the main strength of Models of Dissolution…?

 Both Duck and Lee’s models have practical applications in marriage counselling. For example, with Lee’s model, if a couple are in the exposure stage, counsellors can concentrate on re-establishing affection in the relationship.

AAlso, both theories are descriptive and both look at the breakdown of a relationships as a process rather than a real life event. That is probably why the theories describe the process of breaking up rather than to go in further detail and to explain why relationships break up or what the starting point is of the dissatisfaction(stage 1).

A01 A02 A03 IDA Comparison Which theory better explains dissolution & Why? Roll the dice. The number the dice lands on determines the point you have to give…
