OUTLINE Introduction to Digital Electronics Course outline Course Learning Outcome (CLO) Teaching scheme Let’s get started

INTRODUCTION TO THE DIGITAL ELECTRONICS What is “Electronics”? “Electronics means study of flow of electrons in electrical circuits.” The word Electronics comes from electron mechanics which means learning the way how an electron behaves under different conditions of externally applied fields. 5 The Institution of Radio Engineers has given a definition of electronics as "that field of science and engineering, which deals with electron devices and their utilization." 6 Now, let’s first learn what is meant by the word “digital”. INTRODUCTION TO THE DIGITAL ELECTRONICS CONT……..

WHAT IS DIGITAL? CONT…….. a communication channel or method? A convenience enabler? 1s & 0s? The inverse of analog? Bits versus atoms? Something we can no longer live without?

I am often asked ‘what is digital’? … ‘is it just our website, or broader than that?’ … ‘what exactly do you mean?’ So, I asked around to find out the word-on-the-street around ‘digital’. I was impressed with how many different, nuanced, and insightful answers I was given on the definition — I had to put it all together into a video in order to capture the rich and diverse viewpoints. In the video, you can learn what others think ‘digital’ is, as well as how we define it. - Mark Yolton, Vice Precident of Digital, CISCO Marketing WHAT IS DIGITAL? 9 Watch the video to see how our colleagues and members of the public describe it; listen to hear if your definition is included; and let me know whether you’d add a different perspective. - Mark Yolton, Vice Precident of Digital, CISCO Marketing WHAT IS DIGITAL? 11 WHAT IS DIGITAL? SOURCE: http://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/digitalhttp://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/digital Formally, Digital describes electronic technology that generates, stores, and processes data in terms of two states: positive and non-positive. Positive is expressed or represented by the number 1 and non-positive by the number 0. Thus, data transmitted or stored with digital technology is expressed as a string of 0's and 1's. Each of these state digits is referred to as a bit (and a string of bits that a computer can address individually as a group is a byte).

WHAT IS DIGITAL ELECTRONICS? Let’s now define “Digital Electronics”. “Digital electronics, or digital (electronic) circuits, represent signals by discrete bands of analog levels, rather than by a continuous range.” So, now let’s find out what is meant by “analog”? Source: http://nehasadana.expertscolumn.com/article/what-electronics-introduction-electronics-applications-and-electronics-componentshttp://nehasadana.expertscolumn.com/article/what-electronics-introduction-electronics-applications-and-electronics-components

WHAT IS ANALOG? Analog means continuous in nature, such my voice, or any of the bioelectric signals generated by a living things. Digital means, as defined earlier, discrete, e.g., temperature recorded everyday in the morning at 8:00 a.m.
