7.3.1 Identify and use the basic elements of mapping.
3
What is a map? A map is a projection, or a way of showing the earth on a flat sheet of paper. Because it is impossible to accurately show a round earth on a flat piece of paper, maps are always flawed in some way. **WARNING: MAPS ARE FLAWED BECAUSE THEY ARE FLAT ANDTHE EARTH IS ROUND!

Three World Map Projections Mercator, Peters, and Robinson
5
Despite the values of the Mercator Projection, it distorts the size and shape of land areas. Fact: South America is 8 times as large as Greenland. Fact: Africa is 14 times as large as Greenland. The Peters Projection is an “equal area” map. It represents areas accurately, but it seriously distorts shapes. Compare the size of Europe to Africa on the two maps. Compare the size of the former USSR to China on the two maps.

Why do we use maps? * Try carrying around a globe to find your answer. *Also, globes cannot show us the whole world all at once, and cannot show us the small details that a map can. *Maps are flawed, but they are the best we have.

Using a Map Key… Map Key

How do we read Maps? Scale Bar= a measuring line which helps us to determine distance on a map. The map’s scale tells what distance on the earth is represented by the measurement on the scale bar. Scale: Example= 1 inch on the map might equal 200 miles on the earth 1:200
