Do Now  On your Do Now sheet, explain how writers define a concept by example and how writers define a concept by function.

Definition By Negation 8 th Grade Language Arts

Definition by Negation  Paragraphs using the negation strategy explain what something is by showing what it is not  A non-example should be based on what someone else would say is an example  If no one would disagree with the negation, it is ineffective

Together…  Read through the following excerpts and decide if it using definition by function, example and/or negation.

From Creative Nonfiction by Philip Gerard  “It’s always seemed odd to me that nonfiction is defined, not by what it is, but by what it is not. It is not fiction. But then again, it is also not poetry, or technical writing or libretto. It’s like defining classical music as nonjazz.” Answer: Definition by Negation

From The Bible, Corinthians Book I  “Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.” Answer: Negation and Function

From “Sonnet 116” by William Shakespeare "Let me not to the marriage of true minds admit impediments. Love is not love which alters when it alteration finds, or bends with the remover to remove: O no! It is an ever-fixed mark that looks on tempests and is never shaken; it is the star to every wandering bark, whose worth’s unknown, although his height be taken. Love’s not time’s fool, though rosy lips and cheeks within his bending sickle’s compass come: love alters not with his brief hours and weeks, but bears it out even to the edge of doom. If this be error and upon me proved, I never writ, nor no man ever loved." Answer: Function and Negation

On your own…  Read “Where I Find My Heroes” on page 63 of Springboard.  While reading, identify different definition strategies used by marking the text.

Homework  Using your lists on heroism, write one paragraph using definition by negation.
