ratio -A comparison of two numbers by division
Pg 9 Ratio Practice Mr. Jack has 12 red socks, 15 green socks and 18 blue socks. Find the ratio of: 1) Green socks to red socks 2) Red socks to total number of socks 3) Green socks to white socks What is the ratio of smiley faces to triangles? Vocabulary pg 10 ratio -A comparison of two numbers by division A ratio can be written 3 ways- fraction form ( a/b ), a colon (a:b), or the word to (a to b). HERE IS THE TRICK TO ALWAYS GET IT RIGHT!!!! The magic word is TO. Place a fraction bar over the word TO in the sentence, and write the numbers asked for and you have your fraction!. Ex-Mrs. Howard has 24 chickens. 10 are Rhode Island Reds. What is the ratio of Reds to all the chickens? Now simplify 10/24 = 5/12. 10 24

Pg 11 Sometimes, simplified answers are required for ratios. To simplify, find the GCF and then divide the numerator AND the denominator by the GCF. Practice simplifying: 4/12 16/40 5/30 10/100 Pg 12 Rate- A measurement of two ratios having different kinds of units. Ex- $2.25 for three candy bars Ex- a 16 ounce bag of chips is $2.56 and a 32-ounce bag of chips is $ Which is the better buy? Ex- A car travels at a speed of 60 miles per hour. How many miles will it travel in 5 hours?
