The Meaning of Curriculum Briefly define what is curriculum. What is the role of curriculum in a District, School or classroom? Work at your table Share Out in 5 min. Task #1

What is Curriculum?

Curriculum Defined Our Curriculum is an agreement of what is written, taught, and tested. It is expected that adherence to a tightly aligned curriculum will result in greater student success and greater student learning.

CPA District Definition Written Curriculum is defined as non-negotiable standards, objectives, and expectations. It is a “roadmap” to ensure that students meet the goals and objectives set by the District. Taught Curriculum refers to instruction. It is the utilization of the “roadmap”. Tested Curriculum is assessments of the taught curriculum. It measures the success of the “roadmap”.

CPA Curriculum Development Cycle Readiness Communication Research District Curriculum Team Begin to Implement CCSS Review & Revise our curriculum based on CCCS Student Achievement

Written Curriculum Curriculum Guides Introduction Course Description Essential Questions Text Supplemental Resources CCSS (GLCEs & HSCEs) Targeted Outcomes

Taught Curriculum Responsibility of Teachers to develop: Lesson Plans Units of Study Other approaches to instruction Curriculum Maps

Curriculum Pacing Maps Offers a sequence for delivering instructional content. Provides a clear scope for what must be taught to all students. “Work in progress” whose ultimate owners are the students.

The Three Elements of Curriculum What is the curriculum of CPA schools? It is a ______________ of ____________________ ____________________, carried out by ____________________ practices that reach ______________-______________ thinking skills, and assessed by ______________ measurement. Moving forward: What do we do after the assessment stage? _____________________________________________________ Curriculum comes from the Latin root curr, run. So, in education the word means what we are running in our school district. In that sense, curriculum has three distinct and very interdependent elements. They are:

Data-Driven Curriculum and Instruction Design STEP 1: Examine and Interpret Data Read test reports Tag students Notify teachers and administrators Identify implications for AYP and ACT college- readiness standards STEP 2: Make Curricular and Instructional Decisions Align curriculum Decide what to do Hold meetings Produce materials Decide on implementation calendar Create instructional design STEP 3: Implement, Monitor, and Reassess Implement design using materials by calendar Monitor student progress Differentiate instruction for those with greatest need Test again

Common Assessment Activity Task #3 Common Assessment Description or Function Y or N? A common assessment is a test written by an Instructional Specialist for Teachers to use. A common assessment can be used for both formative and summative measurement. A common assessment is used to find out if students have read the textbook. A common assessment is used as a mid-term and/or final examination. A common assessment measures students’ grasp of concepts that have been taught. A common assessment should measure students’ achievement strictly at the knowledge level on Bloom’s Taxonomy. A common assessment is used to determine students’ grades in a course. A common assessment needs to be added to as more content is taught throughout the year. A common assessment’s items should be written in the order that they are covered in the textbook. A common assessment should be written on teachers’ preparation periods throughout the school year. A common assessment should be written in the simplest format available, such as true/false. A common assessment is the same thing as the ancillary materials that come with the textbook. A common assessment is closely interconnected with teachers’ common planning. A common assessment should provide equivalent practice for the relevant outside-imposed test(s). If a state standard is not covered in the textbook, it should not be measured on the common assessment. A common assessment measures teacher, school, and district effectiveness in addition to student achievement. As standards change, the common assessment should be changed or replaced to adjust to the standards. Teachers’ common instructional plans should be changed to shore up areas of deficiency shown on common assessments. A common assessment is best written during substantial released time during regular school days. A common assessment ties together written standards, instructional practice, and measurement of student achievement with overall improvement as the ultimate goal. Based on the table, a common assessment is a ______________ developed by ______________ to measure students’ ______________ over __________. It should take students to ______________ order ______________ skills. It should NOT determine students’ __________.

Wrap UP & Review Task #3 What is the CPA Curriculum? What is Rigor? What levels of Blooms are we looking to see in your classroom and why? What are some of the elements of our instructional model? What is a common assessment?
