2 DO THESE ANIMALS LOOK FAMILIAR? Michigan is home to many unique plants, animals, and natural resources. The following slides will help you to learn about some of these unique living and non-living parts of Michigan. You will also be able to explore and see why they are such a special part of Michigan’s ecosystems.

3 MICHIGAN’S STATE SYMBOLS While you are exploring the many state symbols of Michigan, try to see if you can answer one or more of these questions:  Have I seen this symbol before?  What environment are most Michigan animals, plants and resources found in?  Why have these animals, plants and resources been chosen as state symbols of Michigan?

4 CHALLENGE STUDENTS- FIND SOMETHING VERY UNIQUE ABOUT EACH STATE SYMBOL. WRITE INFORMATION IN YOUR NOTEBOOKS AND WE WILL COMPARE WITH PARTNERS, WHO CAN UNCOVER THE MOST INTERESTING AND UNIQUE INFORMATION.

11 White Tailed Deer   Chosen as the State Game Mammal in 1997 by a group of Zeeland 4 th graders   Found in every county in Michigan   An important natural and economic resource   A buck grows new antlers each year.   White-tailed deer can run at 35 mph for short distances and for 25 mph over longer distances.   The deer’s winter coat provides such good insulation that snow will stay on a deer’s back without melting for extended periods of time.   Deer can eat 5-9 pounds of food per day.   Deer have a keen sense of smell and hearing.   Part of the white-tailed deer’s diet is often poison ivy.   MORE INTERESTING WHITE TAILED DEER INFORMATION MORE INTERESTING WHITE TAILED DEER INFORMATION

16 White Pine  NATIVE TO MICHIGAN  Chosen as the State Tree in 1955  White Pine Tree Facts  Leaves: needles 3 to 5 in. long and in groups of fives  Cones: slender, without thorns: 3 to 10 in. long  Height: 80 to 100 ft.  Trunk Diameter: 2 to 3 1/2ft  FUN FACTS  Tallest one in Marquette, Mich. is 180 ft.  One needle for each letter of its first name: W-H-I-T-E.  Wood used in home construction.
