1 Inquiry Based Learning Green Technology (CTE105) Which Bulb is Best? Paul Chanley (2009) Northern Essex Community College

2 Light Bulb Evaluation  Objective: Develop an experiment that will evaluate different technologies of light bulbs for common household lighting  Module is designed to enlighten students and help them become more educated energy consumers  Students will receive inquiry week five Three class periods, (10 hours). Work in groups of two or three.

3 Light Bulb Evaluation  Students will evaluate Incandescent, LED and CFL light bulbs at common wattage ratings  For each type of light bulb, students will be required to: measure the energy consumption calculate carbon footprint provide a cost analysis measure output of light  Students are provided materials and must develop an inquiry that will include a hypothesis, experimental procedures, data analysis and conclusion

4 Prior Knowledge  Proficiencies/ Prerequisites: College Reading, Basic Writing & Basic Algebra I  Computer Skills: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Internet research. Materials: Total Cost ($65 - $170)  Computer - with Internet, Excel, Word & PowerPoint  “Kill-A-Watt” Meter ($25)  LED, CFL & Incandescent Light Bulbs ($15 - $70)  Light Sensing Meter ($70) Optional- Photo Resistors w/multimeter ($22)  Light Bulb Socket w/reflector ($3)  Ruler/Meter Stick
