Not just a Catholic symbol of the Trinity(15 c.) 3 Creoles Descendants of French & Spanish colonists. Spoke French Came after revolution in Haiti seeking shelter among those with shared heritage. In 1810 - 10,000 Creoles doubled the population of New Orleans. FACT # 1

4 Creoles Vs. Americans Did not agree on how to run government. Alternated between governors. Americans did not want to meet in New Orleans the center of Creole power. In 1825 Marquis de Lafayette visits New Orleans bringing temporary peace. Due to his heritage and role in American Revolution. Governor Henry Johnson led legislature to compromise about the capital. FACT # 2

5 In 1830 the capital was moved from New Orleans to Donaldsonville. Only lasted one Term. Town was too small. Still in Creole territory. Next term - returned to New Orleans with its hotels, restaurants and entertainment. FACT # 3

6 In 1849 Americans moved the capital to Baton Rouge The building cost $100,000 and took two years to build. James Dakin designed the capital building to look like a castle. It is now referred to as the Old State Capital. FACT # 4

7 1828 Andy Jackson elected President Supporters called themselves Democratic-Republicans, later shortened to Democrats. LA’s first interest in national political parties. “Common Man” people had the right to participate in government. States extended suffrage to white males over 21. FACT # 5

8 1834 Whig Party established in LA Judge Alexander Porter was Louisiana Whig Leader. Formed to Oppose Jackson. Supported tariffs to keep out foreign competition. Creoles and Sugar Planters joined. National conflict over slavery killed the party. FACT # 5

9 American Party- Know Nothings Gained control of New Orleans city government in 1854. Kept control until Civil War. Opposed to immigrants and Catholics. Political campaigns added to social life of Antebellum era. FACT # 6

10 1812 - La’s 1 st Constitution Panic of 1837, an economic depression proved the state needed banking and economic controls. 1845 - New Constitution more democratic. Representation and banking issues. First La. Constitution that said anything about education. FACT # 7 1852 - Constitution answered representation and loosened banking regulations to promote growing economy.
