Let There Be Light – A hotlist of websites about light Introduction Here is a list of good websites that you can visit to learn about light. It has been arranged under sub-headings to help you find what you want easily. Internet Links How does light travel? Speed of light? http://www.opticalres.com/optics_for_kids/kidoptx_p1.html http://www.zephyrus.co.uk/lightfacts.html http://www.tooter4kids.com/Light_Color/reflection.htm Refraction- Does light break when you bend it? http://www.spartechsoftware.com/reeko/Experiments/refraction.htm http://acept.la.asu.edu/PiN/mod/light/reflection/pattLight1Obj3.html http://library.thinkquest.org/26938/link04f.html Reflection-things aren’t always as they seem! http://www.tooter4kids.com/Light_Color/reflection.htm http://www.learner.org/teacherslab/science/light/lawslight/funhouse/index.html http://www.exploratorium.edu/snacks/spherical_reflections.html http://www.exploratorium.edu/snacks/corner_reflector.html http://www.exploratorium.edu/snacks/cylindrical_mirror.html http://www.exploratorium.edu/snacks/parabolas.html http://www.zephyrus.co.uk/mirrors1.html Escher http://www.nga.gov/cgi-bin/pimage?47667+0+0+ggescher Shadows-Can you really catch a http://www.learner.org/teacherslab/science/light/lawslight/player/index.html Einstein http://www.wesleyan.edu/synthesis/culture-cubed/haas/maintemp.htm

Here’s your chance to learn a little more about light!! You can work with a partner, or independently. Each topic is linked to a page that has some good related websites. Examine each website, deciding on its usefulness for your learning. Then click the light bulb to take you to the next page. Click the mirror to return you to the previous page. Clicking on the home icon will return you to the start You must work through the questions on each of the first four topics. When you finish these, you might like to take a look at the website on Albert Einstein to find out a little about this famous scientist. Reflection- Things aren’t always as they seem Refraction – If you bend light will it break Shadows Light – the facts!

Write the answers to these questions in your integrated studies book. How does a mirror work? What type of surfaces can act as a mirror? What is the difference between a concave and a convex mirror? Draw a diagram to show your ideas. This is a painting by a famous artist named Escher. Why do you think it is such a famous painting?

Reflection-things aren’t always as they seem! There are lots of experiments to try in these websites. Choose only one or two. There are mirrors in the green ‘Colour and Light’ tub. http://www.tooter4kids.com/Light_Color/reflection.htm http://www.learner.org/teacherslab/science/light/lawslight/funhouse/index.html http://www.exploratorium.edu/snacks/spherical_reflections.html http://www.exploratorium.edu/snacks/corner_reflector.html http://www.exploratorium.edu/snacks/cylindrical_mirror.html http://www.exploratorium.edu/snacks/parabolas.html http://www.zephyrus.co.uk/mirrors1.html

1.Using a Venn Diagram. List the variety of things that create light. 2.How does light travel? 3.What speed does light travel? 4.Write 3 ways that you can control light. Create some ‘Did you Know’ speech bubbles, to present some facts about light. You can add some of your own if you like!

Natural Man Made http://www.opticalres.com/optics_for_kids/kidoptx_p1.html http://www.zephyrus.co.uk/lightfacts.html http://www.tooter4kids.com/Light_Color/what_is_light.htm

1.What is refraction? 2.Create a P ositive M inus I nteresting chart about refraction

1.What is a shadow? 2.How do shadows occur? 3.Why are some shadows darker than others? 4.Why are some shadows longer than others? Think Pair Share Play the games on the website. Discuss the following questions with your partner. Get together with another pair. Do you agree?

http://www.wesleyan.edu/synthesis/culture-cubed/haas/maintemp.htm http://www.einstein-website.de/z_kids/biographykids.html Albert Einstein was a famous scientist whose theories lead to major changes in the way other scientists viewed the world. Visit these websites to read some more about Einstein and his theories.
