3 General Facts and Information The moon is the earth’s only natural satellite (a celestial body orbiting another of larger size). The moon is cold and dry and has craters (a depression formed by impact) on it’s surface. The moon has no atmosphere (mass of air that surrounds the object). In this picture the moon appears larger than the earth because we are looking at it from a closer distance than the earth.

5 More Facts The same side of the moon always faces the earth. If you were standing on the moon, the sky would always appear dark, even during the daytime. The moon is about 238,900 miles from the earth.

7 There are 8 different phases of the moon With a New Moon, the moon appears dark because it is between the sun and the earth. The Last Quarter Moon and the First Quarter Moon may also be called Half Moon, because it looks like half of a moon. Waning refers to the moon getting smaller. Waxing refers to the moon getting bigger.

9 Fun Facts and Information Neil Armstrong was the first person to walk on the moon in 1969. He made a statement that is now a famous quote, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” The American astronauts put an American flag on the moon. Astronauts have brought back about 842 pounds of moon rocks from their missions to the moon. The composition of moon rocks is very similar to earth rocks.
