Start up notes 1.Compound light microscope 2.Stereoscope 3.Simple 4.SEM 5.TEM 6.Acoustic

Microscopes Tools for investigation The purpose of using a microscope is… Magnify MAGNIFY MAGNIFY… FOCUS FOCUS FOCUS

Diagnostic tools….. A number of research and diagnostic tools of medicine use lenses and beams to image the subject they study. Some are true “microscopes”,but many have moved forward into the technology of elecrtonics and computer display. These 6 are to know for class…. Take notes.

Compound Light Microscope A student scope with 2 or more lenses. Used to look at a thin slice where light can pass through the specimen

Stereoscope (Dissecting scope) A student scope with 2 eyepieces showing external view of non- living or living material in 3D view.

Simple A Magnifying glass. One lens for focus & enlargement.

SEM scanning electron microscope External view of non-living material using an electron beam. Specimens are dried, frozen, thinly sliced, & coated with metal.

SEM Images

TEM Transmission electron microscope Internal view of non-living material using electron beam. NEW! TPM (positron) positively charged electrons do not harm living specimens.

TEM imaging

Acoustic scope Sound waves are used to image on computer. The picture looks like a microscope view. The echoes of high frequency waves will not damage living tissue. Often used in tumor study

Acoustic imaging
