NCSX Upper Support Assy- SE124-051 Design Concept Six rods support VV - three define plane - other three must be in same plane and radius to be stress free Assy is free to pivot and rotate around ball/spherical ends but is rigid lengthwise - no compensation for mismatch other than mount height - designed to be in TP within 0.25” Nominal load without pfc is 4000 lbs/rod tension Worst case loading is during 350 C bake out with maximum TP tolerance - resulting additional load is +/-7,200 lbs (+/-16,300 psi ) - max total stress is 20,000 psi - tensile strength at 350 C is 112 ksi

4. NCSX Out of Tolerance Fabrication Assume: Differential expansion between MC and VV is 0.641” TP is 3/4” - one rod outbd radially 3/8” -one rod inbd radially 3/8” Results: Imposed load is 22,600 lbs (stress 51 Ksi) Total static stress is 64 Ksi 12.14 x2 x1 0.641 Z TP

NCSX Fix Design for TP of 3/4” Mount modified to add resilience with series Belleville washers - pair of washers for compression - pair of washers for tension - deflection capability for pair 0.092” & spring constant 95000 lbs/in Deflections - deflection due to static load 0.042” - deflection due to mismatch 0.038” 0.080” Results: Induced load reduced to 3100 lbs ( stress 7 Ksi)

NCSX SE124-077 Fix No modification of existing parts required, only addition of parts Four Belleville washers, two types [18, 19] Longer studs [8] G-11 spacer [16] Two thrust washers [17, 20] Three retainer nuts [11] Lead Times Bellevilles are Key Belleville types but Inconel is special order -16 Spacer
