I. Action & Reaction Forces
Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion: For Every action, there is an equal and opposite action.
4
Downward force on the air from the wings.
Upward force on the wings from the air. Forces are: 1. Equal & opposite directions 2. Not acting on the same object
5
Momentum = mass x velocity
II. Momentum Momentum – a characteristic of an object in motion. Momentum = mass x velocity
6
Momentum = mass x velocity
5,500 kg 1,800 kg Both going 96.5 km/h (60 mph) Momentum = 530,750 kg m/s Momentum = 173,700 kg m/s Momentum = mass x velocity

The truck is still going 96.5 km/h (60 mph)
5,500 kg 1,800 kg For the momentum to be the same, the car must have a velocity of km/h ( mph) The truck is still going 96.5 km/h (60 mph) Momentum = mass x velocity
