5 How to convert within the metric system
METRIC CONVERSION How to convert within the metric system © Copyright   M. J. Krech. All rights reserved.

6 1 x 10 = 10 10 X 10 = 100 10 x 100 = 1,000 The Metric System
is based on sets of 10 1 x 10 = 10 10 X 10 = 100 10 x 100 = 1,000

7 Is used by scientists all over the world!
The Metric System Is used by scientists all over the world!

8 Naming the Metric Units
Meter units measure Length Gram units measure mass or weight Liter units measure volume or capacity.

9 Friends this is going to be SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Easy!!!!!!
Converting Metric Friends this is going to be SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Easy!!!!!!

10 Here’s the gist of it……. KILO- HECTO- DEKA- UNIT Deci- Centi- Milli-
To convert from a smaller unit to a larger unit (going to the left) divide by 10 for each step. (Move the decimal one time to the left for each box) Ex: 4 millimeters= 0.4 centimeters KILO- Kilograms (kg) Kiloliters (kl) Kilometers (km) HECTO- *Not commonly used Hectograms Hectoliters Hectometers DEKA- Deckagrams Deckaliters Deckameters UNIT Grams (g) Liter (l) Meter (m) Deci- Decigrams Deciliters decimeters Centi- Centigrams Centiliters Centimeters Milli- Milligrams Milliliters millimeters To convert from a larger unit to a smaller unit (going to the right ) multiply by 10 for each box (Move the decimal one time to the right for each step. Ex: 25 kilograms = grams

11 How it works!

12 Do you remember… King Henry?

13 King Henry Doesn’t Usually Drink Chocolate Milk
Did you also know? King Henry Doesn’t Usually Drink Chocolate Milk Memorize      this!

14 We’ll make a handy, dandy device every time we convert!
You must also know… …how to convert within the Metric System. We’ll make a handy, dandy device every time we convert! K H D U D C M

15 Write the units in the middle under the “U”.
U: UNITS K H D U D C M m l g Write the units in the middle under the “U”.

16 Remember the units! M: L: G:

17 Let’s add the meter line:
K H D U D C M km hm dam m dm cm mm

18 Let’s add the Liter line:
K H D U D C M km hm dam m dm cm mm kL hL daL L dL cL mL Deca can also be dk or da

19 Let’s add the gram line:
K H D U D C M km hm dam m dm cm mm kL hL daL L dL cL mL kg hg dag g dg cg mg

20 Let’s add the gram line:
k h d U d c m km hm dam m dm cm mm kl hl dal l dl cl ml kg hg dag g dg cg mg

21 Metric Recipe Look at the problem. Look at the unit
that has a number. On the device put your pencil on that unit. Move to new unit, circle it counting jumps and noticing the direction of the jump. 3. Move decimal in original number the same # of spaces and in the same direction.

22 One last caution: Be careful NOT
to count the spot you start from, where you put your pencil point. Only count the jumps!

23 Example #1: Look at the problem. 56 cm = _____ mm
Look at the unit that has a number. 56 cm On the device put your pencil on that unit. k h d U d c m km hm dam m dm cm mm

24 Example #1: Move to new unit, counting jumps and
noticing the direction of the jump! k h d U d c m km hm dam m dm cm mm One jump to the right!

25 Example #1: Move decimal in original number the same # of spaces and in the same direction. 56 cm = _____ mm 56.0. One jump to the right! Move decimal one jump to the right. Add a zero as a placeholder.

26 Example #1: 56 cm = _____ mm 56cm = 560 mm

27 Example #2: Look at the problem. 7.25 L = ____ kL
Look at the unit that has a number L On the device put your pencil on that unit. k h d U d c m kl hl dal L dl cl ml

28 Example #2: Move to new unit, counting jumps and
noticing the direction of the jump! k h d U d c m kl hl dal L dl cl ml Three jumps to the left!

29 .007.25 Move decimal to the left three jumps.
Example #2: (3) Move decimal in original number the same # of spaces and in the same direction. 7.25 L = ____ kL Three jumps to the left! Move decimal to the left three jumps. Add two zeros as placeholders.

30 Example #2: 7.25 L = ____ kL 7.25 L = kL

31 Examples #3-7: (3) 35 mm = ____ cm (4) 14,443 L = ____ kL
(5) kg = ____ g (6)35.4 L = ____ mL (7)16 mm = ____ km

32 Compare and Contrast Customary Metric

33 How many minutes in 7 days?
Time Conversions How many minutes in 7 days?

34 Seconds, Minutes, Hours, Days, Weeks, Months, Years
1 minute = 60 seconds 1 hour = 60 minutes 1 day = 24 hours 1 week = 7 days 1 year = 12 months/ 52 weeks/365 days

35 Warning This involves Multiplying more than one fraction! The big idea=cancel out your label!

36 Steps Make a plan of the conversions you will need
Example: day-hour-min-sec First number/fraction is the number they give you Place label you want to cancel in OPPOSITE location

37 Let’s try together………….
1. How many seconds are there in a day? 1 day 1 ∙ 24ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠 1 𝑑𝑎𝑦 ∙ 60 𝑚𝑖𝑛 1 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟 ∙ 6𝑜 𝑠𝑒𝑐 1 𝑚𝑖𝑛 = 24∙60∙60 1 = 86,400 sec/day 2. How many minutes are in 10 days? 10 day 1 ∙ 24ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠 1 𝑑𝑎𝑦 ∙ 60 𝑚𝑖𝑛 1 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟 = 10∙24∙60 1 = 14,400 min in 10 days 3.How many hours are in 64,800 sec? 64,800 𝑠𝑒𝑐 1 ∙ 1 𝑚𝑖𝑛 60𝑠𝑒𝑐 ∙ 1 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟 60 𝑚𝑖𝑛 = ∙60 = 64, = 18 hours

38 You try 4. How many minutes in 7 days?
Answer: 10,080 min 5. How many weeks in 20,160 minutes? Answer: 2 weeks

39 Think, Pair, Share 3-2-1 Summary
3 things that I learned today are: 2 things that I really liked about this unit is: 1 thing I still don’t understand or need more practice on is:
