Overview

Guidelines for Submitting Appeals for the Field Test 4 Overview of Appeals California TIDE User Guide Pg. 47 What is an appeal? –Request for invalidating, resetting, reopening, or restoring students’ tests –Submitted in TIDE by authorized users –Must be approved by the California Department of Education (CDE)

Guidelines for Submitting Appeals for the Field Test 5 Example Reasons for Appeals California TIDE User Guide Pg. 47 Test security incident Incorrect test setting Wrong student takes test Wrong test is approved An English learner (EL) who has been in the United States for less than 12 months was administered an ELA test Items are missing answer boxes Students cannot advance to next item

Guidelines for Submitting Appeals for the Field Test 6 Example Reasons for Appeals California TIDE User Guide Pg. 47 A Test Administrator (TA) accidentally administers Field Test instead of Practice Test Student begins a test but does not complete it Student mistakenly submits test before he or she is finished

Identifying the Correct Appeal Type

Guidelines for Submitting Appeals for the Field Test 8 Four types of appeals: 1.Invalidate a test 2.Reset a test 3.Re-open a test 4.Restore a test that has been reset California TIDE User Guide Pg. 47 Identifying the Correct Appeal Type

Guidelines for Submitting Appeals for the Field Test 9 Invalidate a Test Reasons for request: –Security incidents (improprieties or breaches) –Example: A Test Administrator (TA) sees two students discussing answers to questions during a test session Results of approved appeal: –Student loses testing opportunity –Score will not be reported

Guidelines for Submitting Appeals for the Field Test 10 Reset a Test Reasons for request: –Student started test without appropriate designated supports or accommodations –Correct test is not available for student –Wrong student took test –TA approved wrong test Resets are possible if any of the following student test settings were incorrectly set: –American Sign Language –Braille –Closed Captioning

Guidelines for Submitting Appeals for the Field Test 11 Reset a Test Resets are possible if any of the following student test settings were incorrectly set (continued): –Streamlined interface –Translation-stacked (for mathematics only)  Note: Stacked translations are automatically provided when the selected language is Spanish. –Translation-glossary –Text-to-speech as an accommodation (i.e., for ELA reading passages in grades 6–8 or 11) –Any non-embedded accommodation(s)

Guidelines for Submitting Appeals for the Field Test 12 Reset a Test Results of approved appeal: –Removes current test from system and student starts a new test –Student will begin with first item –Student does not lose opportunity –Only most recent test may be reset

Guidelines for Submitting Appeals for the Field Test 13 Re-open a Test Reasons for request: –Student became ill and was unable to resume testing before testing opportunity expired –System issue  i.e., Student completed part of a test, but was not allowed back into it. Result of approved appeal: –Re-opens test that has expired –Student will begin where he or she left off

Guidelines for Submitting Appeals for the Field Test 14 Restore a Test That Has Been Reset Reason for request: –A test has been reset in error –Example: A test reset was requested for a mathematics test instead of an ELA test Result of approved appeal: –Restores a student’s test from “reset” status to its prior status
