4.2 Population

 Population – Total number of people in a given area.  Population has many influences  Transportation  Business  Schools  Geographers study population to see change over time. Population helps Geographers determine longer term trends of an area

 Population Density – Measure of the number of people living in an area  Person per square mile or square kilometer  The more people in an area the more crowded it will be  Population Density affects many things  Land prices  Building height  Traffic

 What parts of the world have the greatest population density?  Why do you think people are concentrated in some areas and spread out in others?

 Tracking population change is important because it allows people to forecast the needs of a society.  Population change is tracked using several key statistics Birthrate: Number of births per 1,000 people Death rate: Number of deaths per 1,000 people  Birth rate – Death rate = Natural Increase rate

MMigration – Process of moving from one place to another Different factors push and pull people to and from different areas PPush factors PPoor farmland LLack of food LLack of jobs PPull factors OOpportunity for better life CCheap land

WHAT IS IN STORE FOR THE FUTURE? GROWTH RATE  Industrial Nations: Slower population growth lower natural increase rate.  Less Industrial Nations: High rate of population growth, some countries will double population every 20 years.
