M Y B ODY By: Martina B http://www.righthealth.com/topic/Picture_Of_B ones/overview/google_imagesearch?img=1 Fast Fact: You had more bones when you were born, than now.

THE SKELETAL SYSTEM Your skeletal system is all of the bones in your body and the tissues such as tendons, ligaments and cartilage that connect them. Your teeth are also a part of the skeletal system in your body. The main job of the skeleton is to provide support for your body. The rib cage protects your lungs, your heart and other muscles behind the rib cage. Fast Fact : Your teeth aren’t considered bones. http://hes.ucfsd.org/gclaypo/skelweb/skel01.ht ml#what Some bones that are part of your skeletal system are the skull, your ribs, the mandible and more. You have 206 bones in your skeletal system. Although when you are born you have more than you do when you get older. They join together later on. 4 MUSCLES OF THE BODY You have over 600 muscles in your body. They are all VERY VERY VERY important. The two most common muscles you can think of are the heart and the brain. The heart pumps blood into veins that are in your body which carries the blood into other parts of your body. Your brain stores all of the things you learn so you can use it later. The muscles of the body are divided into two main classes: skeletal (voluntary) and smooth (involuntary). Skeletal muscles are attached to the skeleton and move various parts of the body. They are called voluntary because a person controls them when they are used, such as when you flex your arm or raise your foot. There are about 650 skeletal muscles in your whole body. Smooth muscles are found in the stomach and intestinal walls, vein and artery walls, and in various internal organs. They are called involuntary muscles because a person generally cannot consciously control them. http://www.scienceclarified.com/Ma- Mu/Muscular-System.html Fast Fact: To keep your heart rate up, you should exercise everyday for at least an hour. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/imag es/ency/fullsize/1097.jpg http://bestanimations.com/Humans/Organs/Or gans.html

THE SKIN OF YOUR BODY The skin on the outside of your body is actually the biggest organ in your whole body. Your skin is very important, it protects and covers everything inside your body. The skin also holds everything together. Without your skin all of your body parts as in bones, and organs would be hanging out all over the place. How’s that for disgusting.!! Fast Fact : Your skin can weigh about 8 lbs. http://www.medical- look.com/diseases_images/Skin- diseases1.jpg http://www.gifs.net/gif/index.php3?n=image.ph p3&image_id=12789&image_name=Head_tal ks_2

SKIN CONTINUATION Body organs are not all internal like the brain or the heart. There is one we have on the outside of our bodies and not the inside. Skin is our largest organ many adults carry about 8 pounds and 22 square feet of skin. It may look thin but your skin actually has more than one layer. This fleshy coating does a way more than make us look presentable. In fact, without it we would literally evaporate. http://science.nationalgeographic.com/science /health-and-human-body/human-body/skin- article.html

THE NERVOUS SYSTEM The nervous system is the control center of the body, monitoring conditions within and outside the body sending out electrical signals to respond to them. This system is a network of specialized cells that communicate information about and organism’s surroundings and itself. It processes this information and causes reactions in other parts of the body. The nervous system is the most multifaceted system in the human body. Fast Fact : The brain and the spine are both part of the nervous system. http://www.drdavidmartino.com/images/auto- nervous-system.jpg http://www.gifs.net /gif/index.php3?n =image.php3&ima ge_id=3135&imag e_name=America n_brain

NERVOUS SYSTEM CONTINUATION The nervous system is made up of your brain, your spinal cord, and an huge amount of nerves that are everywhere throughout your body, it's the control center for your entire body. Your brain uses information it receives from your nerves to control all of your actions and reactions. Without it, you couldn't exist! When you think about it it’s like a storage unit inside of yourself. http://yucky.discovery.com/flash/body/pg0001 36.html

THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM The first step to the digestive system is to not eat the food its to smell it. When you smell it you start salivating and the digestive process begins. Food is our fuel and its nutrients give our bodies’ cells the energy and substances they need to operate. But before food can do that, it must be digested into small pieces the body can absorb and use. http://www.rock- hill.k12.sc.us/schools/middle/slms/Digestive_A H4/Digestive%20system.gif Fast Fact: An adults stomach is about the size of their fist. http://www.gifs.net/gif/index.php3?n=image.ph p3&image_id=12695&image_name=Guts

THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM CONTINUATION The main purpose of the Digestive system is to break down food and take in nutrients. Even before you even eat your food you may smell the food, see it, or maybe even think about it and then the digestive system begins. When you eat your saliva in your mouth breaks down the chemicals in the food to make it easier to swallow. Your digestive system take in the nutrients that you need to stay active. http://kidshealth.org/kid/htbw/digestive_system.html

THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM The circulatory system is responsible for transporting materials throughout the entire body. It transports water, oxygen, and nutrients to billions and billions of body cells and carries away wastes such as carbon dioxide that body cells produce. The circulatory system is divided into three major parts, #1 The heart #2 The Blood #3 The Blood Vessels. http://www.fashion-res.com/EX/10-08- 06/circulatory_system.jpg Fast Fact: The heart and lungs are all part of the circulatory system. http://images.google.com/images?client=safar i&rls=en&q=images%20for%20the%20circulat ory%20system%20for%20kids&oe=UTF- 8&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi

THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM CONTINUATION The circulatory system is made of the heart and blood vessels. Our bodies actually have two circulatory systems. The heart is the key organ or muscle in the circulatory system. Its main job or function is to send blood to other places in your body. This is a very important system in your body. http://kidshealth.org/parent/general/body_basi cs/heart.html

THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM Your respiratory system is made up of the many organs in your body. Your lungs make up one of largest organs in your body, and they work with your respiratory system to allow you to take in air, fresh air. At the top of the respiratory system, the nostrils act as the air intake, bringing the air you breathe into your nose, where it is warmed and humidified. Tiny hairs called cilia protect protect the nasal passageways and other parts of the respiratory tract, filtering out dust and other particles that enter through the breathed air. Fast Fact: breathing is so vital that it happens automatically. http://www.apparelyzed.com/_images/content/ respritory/Respiratory-System.jpg http://image.tutorvista.com/content/animal- morphology/rat-respiratory-system.jpeg

THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM CONTINUATION Air can be taken in through the mouth and in through the nose. These two openings of the airway meet at the throat at the back of the nose and mouth. The throat is part of the digestive system as well as the respiratory system because it carries both food and air. At the bottom of the throat this pathway splits (not literally) in two, one for food which leads to the stomach and the other for air. The epiglottis, a small flap of tissue, covers the air-only passage when we swallow, keeping food and liquid we swallow or that are in our bodies from going into the lungs. http://kidshealth.org/parent/general/body_basi cs/lungs.html

THE HEART Bump Bump, Bump Bump. Your heart keeps a steady beat when you breathe normally. But when you go running, jogging, or any activity your heart beat goes faster and your heart rate goes up. The heart is one of the most important organs in your body. It transports blood to other parts of your body. http://www.livescience.com/images/human_he art_graphic_03.jpg Fast Fact: Your heart is about the size of your fist http://bestanimations.com/

THE HEART CONTINUATION Your heart is really a muscle. It's located a bit to the left of the middle of your chest, and it's about the size of your fist. The heart muscle is special because of what it does. The heart sends blood to other places around your body. The blood gives your body the oxygen and nutrients it needs. And we need oxygen, nutrients, and water to survive. http://kidshealth.org/kid/htbw/heart.html

VOCABULARY Heart: A organ that pumps blood into other parts of your body. Respiratory System: The system for breathing in air or oxygen (they’re the same thing) and breathing out carbon dioxide. Nutrients: A source of nourishment, especially a nourishing ingredient in a food. Lungs: Organs that help you breath. You have two of them. Stomach: The abdomen or belly. About the size of your fist. http://www.morningguyed.com/wp- content/uploads/2009/10/skeleton-bones- clipart.gif
