Improving International Connectivity to Help Access to Telecommunications in Central Asia Eshmambet Amatov Executive Director for Strategic Development Kyrgyz Telecom OJSC Eshmambet Amatov Executive Director for Strategic Development Kyrgyz Telecom OJSC Istanbul, 28-29 April 2010 Caspian Telecom

Specifics of the development of transmission networks in the Kyrgyz Republic Specifics of the development of transmission networks in the Kyrgyz Republic Perspectives of provisioning transit services in Central Asia over international FO backbones Perspectives of provisioning transit services in Central Asia over international FO backbones

Current KT’s Network Development Outlines Year 2009 can be marked by extensive scope and intensiveness of Kyrgyztelecom network modernization and development project works due to completion of almost all functionally distinguishable stages of currently being implemented company’s projects such as: Finalization of the base stage of CDMA-450 wireless access network building project and preparation to the stage of reconfiguration, expansion and optimization of the network Finalization of the base stage of CDMA-450 wireless access network building project and preparation to the stage of reconfiguration, expansion and optimization of the network Completion of most of works on building “Regional microwave network”, and following to network optimization stage – extension of MWS network and expansion of microwave network capacities Completion of most of works on building “Regional microwave network”, and following to network optimization stage – extension of MWS network and expansion of microwave network capacities Completion of Digital Horizon telecommunication project’s “Bishkek” phase and redistribution of and moving project resources to the project phase named “Regional networks” Completion of Digital Horizon telecommunication project’s “Bishkek” phase and redistribution of and moving project resources to the project phase named “Regional networks” Completion of the trial DVB-T broadcasting network in Batken region; Completion of the trial DVB-T broadcasting network in Batken region; Most of all newly built FO cable systems just were put in operation, or are in their final stage like cabling of internationally significant “Osh-Irgeshtam” FO link segment, or starting project works on building of a strategically important FO backbone between North and South of the Kyrgyz Republic Most of all newly built FO cable systems just were put in operation, or are in their final stage like cabling of internationally significant “Osh-Irgeshtam” FO link segment, or starting project works on building of a strategically important FO backbone between North and South of the Kyrgyz Republic

Specifics of the development of transmission networks in the Kyrgyz Republic

Development of Microwave Communications in the Kyrgyz Republic in mid 90-s Transmission systems in the KR are mostly consisted of the microwave networks. From the beginning of its history wireless communication was considered to be the most attractive due to the landscape. The microwave network has more than 65 years history beginning after Second World War. First digitalization took place in mid 90-s consisting today of 76 microwave stations.

Perspectives of provisioning transit services in Central Asia over international FO backbones Currently our telecommunications backbones are not as powerful as necessary for provisioning modern ICT services what makes constraints in level and quality of participation of Kyrgyzstan in international information exchange process, even though the geographical position of the country favors it. Currently our telecommunications backbones are not as powerful as necessary for provisioning modern ICT services what makes constraints in level and quality of participation of Kyrgyzstan in international information exchange process, even though the geographical position of the country favors it. Therefore among perspective plans of KT are activities on rapid building and development of transnational high speed FO backbones, connecting Kyrgyzstan with neighboring countries’ networks. Thus Kyrgyzstan might become a transit telecommunications state located right in the center of the Eurasia continent. An attendant problem for KT here is making use of existing (modernization) and future FO systems effective in terms of application of WDMs technologies An attendant problem for KT here is making use of existing (modernization) and future FO systems effective in terms of application of WDMs technologies There were several telecom projects under which KT has been introducing FO cable systems. Among them are TAE, Chuy projects, North Issyk-Kul, HSIB of ShOC. There were several telecom projects under which KT has been introducing FO cable systems.
