1 Automotive AMMCO Brake Lathe

2 AMMCO Brake Lathe

3 Why - Brake Lathe As brakes are used and worn they get to a point in which they become unusable or under spec A brake lathe allows a person to machine brake parts true so that they can be used again in a brake system

4 Safety Concerns It is important to look over the machine before use in order to determine if damage is present Do not operate a machine which is damaged or in need of repair Proper eyewear or a face shield is a must as it will prevent serious injury from flying metal shavings or loose machine parts Make sure the parts being machined are securely fastened on the lathe Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry and tie hair back to avoid being dragged into the running machine during operation Keep work area clean Keep bystanders away when machine is in operation

5 Setting Up To Machine A Disc Rotor
Inspect the brake rotor to insure that no cracks or deformities are present Determine the thickness of the rotor with a micrometer to insure that the brake rotor is still within the minimum machine to thickness

6 Setting Up To Machine A Disc Rotor
Identify the taper end of the disc brake Taper

7 Setting Up To Machine A Disc Rotor
Setting up the rotor to machine can seem like a confusing task The use of a arbor nut, self aligning spacer, spacers, centering cones and tapers all contribute to align the disc rotor to machine true. Selection of setup components next to lathe

8 Disc Rotor Setup Components
Arbor Nut Self-Aligning Spacer Spacer Tapers Spring Outer Adapter

9 Disc Rotor Setup in Order
Taper to Taper Major Alignment Component Taper Side of Rotor

10 Setting Up To Machine A Disc Rotor
Setup of disc rotor and components on brake lathe Note that the arbor nut is reverse thread so that it will not spin off or loosen during machining Arbor Nut

11 Brake Lathe Controls X Movement Y Movement

12 Brake Lathe Controls Y Movement Control On / Off Switch
X Movement Control Fine Adjustment On Tool Bits

13 Alignment of Tool Bits Use the fine adjustment tool bit control to bring tool bits until they just touch the disk brake Use red knobs to lock off tool bit position for machine process

14 Cross Feed Control This is used to automatically do the machining process Two speeds are used to produce a fast rough cut and slow finishing cut A rough cut is used to take bulk material off of the rotor to speed up machine process

15 Always Have Safety Guards In Place When Machine Is Running!!!

16 Machining Process Align tool bits at the back of the rotor using the Y axis control Turn machine on Engage the cross feed in the fast speed first to begin rough cut

17 Machining Process Adjust tool bits to take another small amount of material off of rotor Repeat process over again in slow speed for a finishing cut

18 Finished Double check that rotor is still in manufactures spec thickness A small amount of wobble or run out is normal in brake rotors Install rotor back on vehicle

19 Cleaning Up Around Machine
Remember to clean up around the machine when complete Brush off metal shavings Empty shavings bin into the garbage Put alignment components back in the rack in their proper position
