Electromagnetic Radiation (NB Pgs 7-9 odd) Picture pg 8
2
Electromagnetic radiation Electromagnetic Radiation is a form of energy. The following are different types of radiation that behave differently.
3
What makes electromagnetic radiation? Electromagnetic radiation is made when an atom absorbs energy ( Electricity- neon signs) The absorbed energy causes one or more electrons to change their location within the atom. When the electron returns to its original position, an electromagnetic wave is produced. Type of atom and amount of energy, determine type of electromagnetic radiation. These waves are called "electromagnetic radiation" because they radiate from the electrically charged electrons
4
Visible Light The visible spectrum is the portion of the electromagnetic radiation that can be detected by the human eye. Colors containing only one wavelength are called pure colors Colors such as pink, or purple variations such as magenta, are a mix of multiple wavelengths. Pure colors: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet (Roy G Biv)
5
Why is neon bright-reddish orange? ** Note:Neon signs can vary in color because of the color of glass used. Pure neon Glass emits the following spectra The orange color we see is a combination of these spectra lines
6
Why are there diff colors? Elements emit specific colors because of their electron arrangementElements emit specific colors because of their electron arrangement. Each type of element has a unique arrangement of electrons.
