ASSITIVE TECHNOLOGY

What is assistive technology? According to the South Carolina Assistive Technology Program, “Assistive technology (AT) is any tool that helps students with disabilities do things more quickly, easily or independently.”

What does the law say? The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) requires that any student with a disability have access to assistive technology. There are many different types of disabilities children may suffer from, but no matter what the disability may be they should have an equal opportunity.

Individual Education Plan Under the law, each student, with a disability, has an individual education plan, or IEP. This plan requires students with disabilities have assistive technology readily available, not just on a remedial basis. This plan looks for current information having to do with the child’s disability and how they are progressing. This plan allows teachers to determine in what ways they can adjust learning to meet the student’s needs.

Examples of Disabilities Hearing Impaired Seeing Impaired Learning Disabled Physically Disabled

Hearing Impaired Types of Assistive Technology Hearing aids- equipment worn in the ear to provide aide in hearing FM unit- transmit sound from the speaker to the listener using a microphone Captions on the television- words spoken on television are displayed on the television screen These types of assistive technology allow students to use equipment, other than their personal vision, to educate themselves in a much easier manner.

Seeing Impaired Types of Assistive Technology Braille- reading technique for the blind  Magnifying Glass- hand tool that magnifies writing Large Print Textbooks- books with larger writing than the normal books Screen Magnifier- a tool that magnifies computer screen print
