2 ATTENDANCE Make sure your child is at school, on time and stays for the entire day Your child cannot learn if he/she is not there.

3 READING Read to your child and with your child Be a role model – let your child see you reading Take your child to the library Sing songs/ make up songs

4 MATH Play counting games with your child Make a game out of telling time on clocks Create and use flashcards with math problems on them Teach time management skills – teach your child how to block out time for school, activities, study time

5 SCIENCE Take nature walks and talk about what you see (animals, trees) Talk about the weather and clouds with your child Look at the stars and moon with your child Name body parts with younger children

6 COMMUNICATION Talk to your child and listen when your child responds; allow them to practice their conversation skills/storytelling skills Teach your child to say “I don’t know” and then how to ask questions Teach your child how to research questions, including locating and using community resources Encourage your child to engage in the classroom and with the teacher

7 RESPONSIBILITY Give your child chores to do each week Teach your child to follow rules Be consistent: with rules, consequences and daily routines Allow them to participate in extra-curricular activities: teamwork, leadership skills, compromise

8 ENVIRONMENT Help your child set up a designated study space and time and honor that space and time Begin to determine what the child likes and dislikes, hobbies and interests Discuss how likes/hobbies connect to higher education and career Change your language: not if your child goes to college, but WHEN

14 IPS Student Long-Term Success Students must… Develop a study routine at home. Be prepared for school everyday. On time, healthy snack, stay on task Give his/her best, quality work. Love reading and asking questions. Be responsible and respectful.
