Sample for task 11 :

Task 11: Steal Apples From the Garden of Hesperides

Notes: Hercules 11 th Anteus- giant Son of Mother Earth Recue Prometheus Atlas Ladon Jason and Argonauts 15 Years later

Task 11 was the most difficult because the apples belonged to Hera. Stealing from Hera could mean instant death. Hercules had to complete this task because he received help on two of the other tasks (the stables and the hydra). Along the way, he fought Anteus, the son of Mother Earth. This giant was renewed when he touched the ground, so Hercules actually strangled him in mid-air! Another interesting thing that happened to Hercules along the way was that he saw and freed Prometheus. He told Hercules to go to his Atlas (Prometheus’s brother). Atlas knew the location of the apples. Hercules tricked Atlas during this task. Atlas went to get the apples for Hercules and made Hercules hold up the earth while he was away. But, when Atlas came back, he decided not to take the heavy burden back. Hercules panicked for the first time in his life. But, he convinced Atlas to take back the earth “just for a few moments while Hercules adjusted his shirt!” Atlas wasn’t too bright, so he did it and Hercules left with the apples! Another version of this myth has Hercules slaying the dragon Ladon (this dragon guarded the apples). After he showed the apples to Eurytheus, Hercules returned them to Hera. After all, they did belong to her. Hercules certainly did not want to upset any of them over a task!

Ladon was the dragon who wound himself around the tree. He guarded the Apples of Hesperides. Jason passed by him 15 years later with his “Argonauts”. Ladon was still “twitching” around the tree.

Anteus battling Hercules: Hercules needed to prevent Anteus from touching the ground.

Hercules tricks Atlas.

Hercules shows the apples to King Eurytheus.

In the end, he wisely returns the apples to Hera…
