1 R19: Bell Ringer 1/30/15 Which rock type is broken down by weathering and erosion?

2 R22: Earth Vocabulary Go to the computer cart and pick up 1 copy each of the “Earth Vocabulary” Foldable. Quietly pick up a pair of scissors and colored utensils

3 R22: Earth Vocabulary Color the following: Intrusive- Red Extrusive-Green Compaction- Orange Cementation- Gray/Silver Sedimentation- Brown Uplift- Purple Weathering-Blue Erosion- Yellow Deposition- Pink Magma- Dark Red

4 R22: Earth Vocabulary Cut out the ENTIRE box Cut along the line of each vocabulary word stopping at “Earth inside and out” It should look like all of your other foldables Put a small line of glue along the back part of “earth inside and out vocabulary” and glue on L22

5 R22: Earth Vocabulary Pick up the correct flap and write the definition in underneath Intrusive- slowly cooled inside Earth (large crystals) Extrusive- cool rapidly on Earth’s surface Compaction- sediments are squeezed and pore space is reduced Cementation- Sediments glued together by minerals

6 R22: Earth Vocabulary Sedimentation- where stones & sand are carried to the bottom of a body of water and form a solid layer Uplift-when rocks are displaced (picked up) Weathering- breaking down of rocks Erosion-when rocks are picked up and moved to another place by ice, water, wind or gravity

7 R22: Earth Vocabulary Deposition- particles of rock are laid down in layers or “deposited.” Heavy particles fall faster to the bottom, and lighter particles stay on top. Magma- molten rock (hot liquid rock) under the Earth’s crust

8 L23: Weathering Over time, water and air attack rocks on Earth’s surface through the process of weathering. Weathering breaks rocks down into smaller pieces. Go get the “Weathering” Foldable on the computer cart. You will be putting all 3 foldables on this page.

9 L23: Weathering There are two types of weathering: Chemical and Mechanical. Color and cut out as flaps and glue them in! Mechanical Weathering- Orange Chemical- Yellow Plants-green Animals- Brown Water/Ice- Blue Wind- Gray

10 L23: Weathering Under the mechanical weathering flap write: When rocks are broken apart physically without any chemical change to the rock Chemical weathering flap: Process that causes the minerals in a rock to change chemically (example: acid rain) Rock will be made up and look different than original rock

11 L23: Weathering Mechanical Weathering Agents Plants: Roots of plants can grow and force cracks in rocks to widen and can sometimes split the rock in have

12 L23: Weathering Animals flap: When animals like earthworms burrow into the ground, they break up soil and particles and loosen rocks, which exposes them to weathering

13 L23: Weathering Water/Ice Flap: When it rains and water fills the cracks in rock, water can freeze and spread the rock apart. When it thaws and freezes over and over again, the rock eventually will break apart. (Ice/Frost- Wedging)

14 L23: Weathering Wind Flap: Wind can carry particles and sediment and grind them against other surfaces wearing them down

15 R23: Weathering Project Use the internet to research ONE location in America that has been altered by weathering. On L23 write a one page paper about the location (name and where it is located) and tell me how it was weathered and eroded. Explain the type of weathering and how it happened.

16 When you are finished with ALL of this…. Earth and Environmental Science: You may work on anything from yesterday’s assignment you did not get done. BE prepared to present your song/skit on Tuesday. Honors: Read chapter 1 in A Civil Action Keep a reading log (take special note of character names and diagnoses of disease and dates) *** (Homework if not completed in class)***
