WELCOME TO SCIENCE 11/13 Come up to the cart and get a soil sample and a tray. Today’s Schedule 1. Soil Samples 2. Ch. 10 Section 1 Notes/Discussion

What makes up your soil?

Science Starter: Monday, 9/16 Which of the following structures can be found in the plant cell but not in the animal cell. A. Vacuoles B. endoplasmic reticulum C. mitochondria D. cell wall

This Week’s Schedule This week we will begin our first full chapter from the book: WEATHERING! We will begin the Directed Reading Packet and it will be due early next week. On Wed. we will be going outside for the Weathering Tour. Dress Appropriately! Friday will be the Weathering Tour Quiz.

Have these places always looked like they do in these pictures?

What has caused these places to change the way they look?

What process changes the way Earth looks the most? Weathering The breaking down of rock into small pieces.

Mechanical Weathering Physically breaking rock into smaller pieces. How can this happen? Wind, Water, Ice, Gravity, and Organisms

How do wind, water, and gravity cause weathering? Abrasion The action of rocks and sediment grinding against each other and wearing exposed surfaces. Geology Rocks:

How do wind, water, and gravity cause weathering? Ice Ice Wedging- Water gets into cracks in rocks. When the water freezes, it expands, causing the crack to get bigger. Weathering

Can plants & animals cause weathering? YES!!! Plants Roots can grow into a crack causing the crack to get bigger and bigger.

Can plants & animals cause weathering? Animals As animals burrow into the ground, they loosen the soil which helps to break it down. ARKive - Arabian sand boa ARKive - Aardvark video Earthworms

Science Starter: Tuesday, 9/17 Species A is a predator species, and species B is a prey species. What would be the first thing to happen if all of species A were removed from the ecosystem? A. A predator species similar to species B will experience rapid population growth. B. There will be a time of rapid population growth of species B. C. The amount of disease in species B will increase to limit the population. D. Other predator species will move into the ecosystem.

Is mechanical weathering the only type of weathering? Absolutely Not!!! Chemical Weathering The break down of rocks into new substances by a chemical reaction.

Water & Chemical Weathering Just as water is the most important factor in mechanical weathering, it is also the most important factor in chemical weathering. Water It can dissolve rock Acid rain can eat away rock Earth: Acid Rain Eating Washington, D.C. Acid Rain
