English 12 Mr. Warren Period Three

4,480 American military deaths 33,169 American soldiers wounded 103,253 – 112,824 Iraqi civilian deaths 1.3 trillion dollars spent on the war

Strengthening of Iran and the weakening of the U.S. military.

The war with Iraq has left the country very weak and fractured. In one possible case, if we left Iran could take over Iraq and gain power. In another, the Shi’a leader in Iraq could be elected who is pro Iranian and thus Iran’s influence in the armed forces, policy, intelligence and administration is strengthened.

One report says that at one point 40% of the army’s total equipment has been in Iraq. This means are military is spread thin with it focusing solely in Iraq. We have lost numerous military equipment there including:  80 M1 Abrams tanks  55 Bradley fighting vehicles  20 Stryker wheeled combat vehicles  20 M113 armored personnel carriers  250 Humvees  500+ Mine clearing vehicles, heavy/medium trucks, and trailers  109 helicopters and more.

After the invasion in 2003 there was no provisional government which left Iraq very weak with a lack of leadership. In 2006 The Iraqi Transitional Government was set up to draft the a permanent constitution for Iraq and set up a transitional governement.

This process was ended in 2004 when there was a transfer of sovereignty to the Iraqi Interim Government. The policy wasn’t completely removed however, due to the wording of the policy under the deBa’athification council in the CPA.

As of 2006 the US military were training the Iraq military as an anti-insurgency force. This would also help lessen the tensions from the early policy decision to disband the army.

About 46 thousands to 47 thousands troops are currently still in Iraq President Obama plans to withdraw most of the US military force from Iraq around the New Year.
