Kingdom Protista Eukaryotes that are not members of the kingdoms Plantae, Animalia, or Fungi Characteristics –Live in moist environment –Either free-living or parasitic –Unicellular or multicellular –Reproduce asexually and sexually –Alternation of generation : switching back and forth between haploid and diploid.

Protists Animallike-Heterotroph (Protozoans) Plantlike-Autotroph (Algae) Funguslike-Heterotroph (Molds) Zooflagellates Sarcodines Ciliates Unicellular Multicellular Decomposers Sporozoans Flagella Pseudopods Cilia Parasitic Euglenphytes Red Algae Slime Molds Chrysophytes Dinoflagellates Green Algae Brown Algae Water Molds

Animal-like Protists Protozoans Zooflagellates –swim using flagella, often referred to as zooflagellates. Ex: Trypanosoma – causes African sleeping sickness Sarcodines –use pseudopods for feeding and movement. Ex: Amoebas

Protozoans cont. Ciliates: –use cilia for feeding and movement. –Ex: Paramecium Sporozoans: – do not move on their own and are parasitic. –Ex: Plasmodium falciparum - Malaria

Plant-like Protists Algae

Algae cont. Characteristics –strictly photosynthetic protists –can be multicellular or unicellular. –Ex: Unicellular : Diatoms Multicellular : Green Algae, Red Algae, Brown Algae

Algae cont. Benefits: –Produce much of Earth’s oxygen through photosynthesis –Food source for organisms in the ocean Phytoplankton: population of small, photosynthetic organisms found near the surface of the ocean. –Food for humans –Used to make plastics and other products

Fungus-like Protists Molds Characteristics: –Heterotrophs that absorb food from dead or decaying matters. –Lack chitin cell wall of fungi Ex: Slime molds, water molds –Important recyclers of organic materials –Cause diseases in plants Slime molds Water molds

Question 1 A protist is any organism that is not a plant, an animal, a fungus, or a prokaryote. –A. True –B. False

Question 2 Funguslike protists are –A. autotrophic –B. photosynthetic –C. parasitic –D. chemosynthetic

Question 3 Animal-like protists are –A. autotrophs. –B. heterotrophs. –C. decomposers. –D. producers

Question 4 Short, hairlike projections used for movement are called –A. flagella –B. cilia –C. pseudopods

Question 5 Structures found in sarcodines that are used for feeding and movement are known as –A. pseudopods –B. flagella –C. cilia

Question 6 Malaria is caused by the sporozoan –A. plasmodium –B. anopheles –C. giardia
