Commingled Recycling Consolidation Waste Industries Vance/Granville Branch October 2014

Nature of Market The Vance/Granville Branch services the four county area of Vance, Granville, Franklin, and Warren Counties and a small section of southern Virginia. This encompasses over 2000 square miles of predominately rural areas. A rough estimate of the population of the service area is in excess of 200,000.

Residential and Commercial Recycling In 06 – 07 we serviced less than 1,000 homes and/or businesses with recycling services In 13 – 14 we now service over 10,500 homes and businesses with commingled collection This is due to the rising popularity of recycling in the area, the ABC legislation, and the availability of commingled processing.

Thus with the explosion of recycling work, we were faced with the transport of ever increasing tonnages to the processing facilities in Raleigh and making it cost effective.

Distance to Processor Just under 50 Miles

Consolidation Process Open 1 to 1.5 hours prior to accepting MSW Residential Trucks and Roll Off Containers to dump commingled materials Materials compacted and loaded into transport trailers exactly the same as MSW With compaction average 15.60 tons/load Straight load over the top 11.67tons/load 33% improvement in load weights

Value of Consolidation Taking into account the cost of transport (direct haul) in individual collection vehicles or roll off containers I estimated the cost per ton at $76.55. This is about a 50 – 50 split of residential volumes and roll off container volumes. The comparative cost per ton utilizing the methods shown is approximately $16.24 per ton. A reduction of 78% in just straight transportation cost.

Even if you do not have access to the Blok-Pak compaction system, (if you can devise a method to load transport trailers) you can estimate approximately $21.85 per ton (with similar distances), still an impressive 71% reduction in just transport costs. For initial or start up programs I would recommend a drop off program utilizing roll off containers as you can obtain 4.5 to 1 load reduction hauling to market.

So if you are in a rural market, or one without a processing facility in what you currently consider a reasonable distance; you might reconsider this method of transport to the facility and make recycling work in your community.
