2 Impeachment President is charged with wrongdoing (crime). This is done by the House of Representatives. What happens after the President is impeached by the House of Representatives? Senate holds a trial and votes to decide if the President is guilty. 2/3 must vote for conviction of the President for him to be kicked out of office.

3 Impeachment What if the President is found guilty by the Senate? He is removed from office and faces criminal charges in a courtroom.

4 President Johnson’s Impeachment Sequence of Events 1. Johnson tries to fire the Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. 2. Firing Stanton was illegal because the Tenure of Office Act stated that the President had to have the Senate’s approval to hire and fire cabinet officials. 3. The House of Representatives voted to impeach Johnson. Johnson becomes the first Pres. to be impeached. 4. Senate tries Johnson and he was found not guilty by one vote.
