Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Chapter 1

i. Acknowledgement ii. Abstrak (in Malay language) iii. Abstract iv. Table of Content, List of Figures, List of Tables, List of Symbol/Abbreviation and List of Appendices v. Chapter 1: Introduction vi. Chapter 2: Literature Review vii. Chapter 3: Methodology viii. Chapter 4: Expected Result ix. Chapter 5: Conclusion

 Log book will be assessed by Supervisor – 10% from overall mark  Meeting with Supervisor : at least once every 2 weeks  Records every formal meeting with supervisor  Describes the work that has been done in the previous week AND the expected work that is going to be done for next week

 Justify and explain your project suggestion  Highlight the project concept and its beneficials  Convince the examiner board that;  You understand what your project is all about  How does it differ from the previous project  Relation between your problem-solving approach i.e. your project with the real world scenario

 Use Microsoft Project  Mark every milestone for every major/important activities that you want to achieve. Examples :  Aim, objectives and scope are defined  Research material and literature study are fulfilled  Preliminary design of the proposed prototype is determined  Demo/presentation material is completed  Report writing is finished

1.1 Introduction 1.2 Problem Background 1.3 Problem Statement 1.4 Aim 1.5 Objectives 1.6 Scope and Limitations 1.7 Importance and Justification 1.8 Summary

Describes an overview of the proposed project:  Explain what is to be achieved in the project/study  In a general way, describe;  What are the problems to be solved  Suggestions on how to solve the problems

 A general description on the problems to be solved. Give examples if needed.  Also, an explanation of problems exist in a real world scenario that needs to be investigated and improved.

 A declaration of problems that are going to be solved in the project  State the major project question, and then provide a few other project questions to support the former

 How does a low-level feature approach can be applied in retrieving images?  How to determine the low-level features in an image?  How to retrieve the similar/matched images using the determined low level features?  What techniques/formula/model should be applied for similarity measurement between images?  How to evaluate the performance of the determined low-level features?

 How to incorporate a 3d walkthrough in information search application in a library?  How to model the library layout and structures into three dimension?  How to characterize the information in an interactive manner?  How to represent the information in the three dimension model?  What method/way of users to interact with the walkthrough experience?

 A one sentence statement about what to be achieved in the project  Every project has only one aim  E.g. The project aims to develop a media player that can be controlled by speech, using a.Net platform The aim of the project is to build up a simple classifier using Gaussian model in classifying images

 Objective is;  A process/major task which will be carried out to achieve the aim of the project  Must be countable/measureable, not something subjective (perception) – careful when writing for ease of use, for convenience  No need to state to understand…/to study… when determining objective  Written in point form

 Tells the project direction not the system function  Usually written as;  Untuk menganalisa ….  Untuk memperbaiki ….  Untuk menghasilkan….  To design ……..  To develop …..  Objectives must be achieved at the end of the project  Will be discussed in the final chapter as a summary or conclusion of the project

 Untuk merekabentuk semula proses inventori bagi syarikat XYZ  Untuk membangunkan sebuah sistem inventori berdasarkan rekabentuk proses yg baru  To enable road users to retrieve information regarding accidents and road safety  To provide the generation of reports and statistic regarding accidents cases in UTM  To analyze how images can be classified and retrieved based on the color feature

 Minimum 2, maximum 5 objectives  1 objective is just too general and similar to project aim  More than 5 is just too details  The best choice; 3 or 4 objectives Remember! At the end of the project, you must FULFILLED all the objectives

 The limitations and restrictions that must be set in order to carry out the project  It is a condition in determining whether the project is successful or not  Factors to consider;  Approach/Techniques/Model/Framework  Cost  Time  Data size  Organization  Case study

 State only the important matters, especially;  in determining the boundary of the project,  matters that will raise uncertainties and doubts later on  Issues like equipment requirement, technology, module, methodology shouldn’t be under Scope section because they are being explained in dedicated chapters

 Usually written in point form;  Limitation to considers;  Venue/location/organization where the project is carried out – if your project is attached to any company/body/organization  Time needed for data collection – if your project needs collected data within certain range of time/period/hour  The focused issues and non-focused issues  e.g. The focus feature is only on color feature, not textures and shapes

 The study only concern upon the information of students who live on-campus only  The system proposed only process payment by cash  The comparison will only be performed on technique A, B and C  The layout used in the walkthrough is of ground floor level only  The speech interface model will only make use of female voice aged 18 to 30

 Highlight the importance of WHY the project is being carried out  State the benefits/advantages/profits of the project  State who will benefited from the project and how is it beneficial to them  What are the motivational factors/catalyst to the project

 Summarize all that has been discussed in Chapter 1  One paragraph will do

 Complete the Project Suggestion Form, get it from http://gmm.fsksm.utm.my/~psm/cgi-bin/psm_material/cgi- bin/homepage.cgi http://gmm.fsksm.utm.my/~psm/cgi-bin/psm_material/cgi- bin/homepage.cgi  Submit it to me/En Cik Suhaimi before 30 th July 2010  Be prepare for your Phase 1 interview on Week 4 – timetable will be released shortly 23
