The Hamburger Project

Topic Sentence What is the topic sentence? The topic sentence is the first sentence in a paragraph. What does it do? It introduces the main idea of the paragraph. How do I write one? Summarize the main idea of your paragraph. Indicate to the reader what your paragraph will be about. Example: I had a wonderful summer.

Supporting Details What are supporting sentences? They come after the topic sentence, making up the body of a paragraph. What do they do? They give details to develop and support the main idea of the paragraph. How do I write them? You should give supporting facts, details, and examples. Example: First, I started sleeping in every day. I would then go swimming with my friends. I stayed up late watching TV a lot, and I went to camp for a week.

Transitions Transitional words and phrases help a writer maintain flow and establish a clear connection between ideas. In addition, transitions can help unify a paragraph and allow the reader to better understand the relationship between ideas. Without transitions the passage would be both choppy and abrupt. Example words & phrases again, and, also, for example, for instance, in fact, although, also, in conclusion, after, afterward, as, as soon as, above, below, beyond, close, because, as a result, consequently Example in a sentence First, I started sleeping in every day.

Concluding Sentence What is the concluding sentence? The concluding sentence is the last sentence in a paragraph. What does it do? It restates the main idea of your paragraph. How do I write one? Restate the main idea of the paragraph using different words. Example I wished my summer would never end!

Paragraph I had a wonderful summer. First, I started sleeping in every day. I would then go swimming with my friends. I stayed up late watching TV a lot, and I went to camp for a week. I wished my summer would never end!

Burger with the works A midwinter vacation at Club Tropic has its good points and bad points. The beaches are clean and uncrowded. The surrounding countryside is lush and soothing to winter-weary eyes. Furthermore, being able to take sailing and scuba diving lessons, while friends back home shovel snow, makes the outdoor activities extra- enjoyable. On the other hand, several features of Club Tropic are substandard. The food is poor, and, because the club is isolated, eating elsewhere is impossible. Security could also be better, as thefts from several guests' rooms indicated. So for some vacationers, nice scenery and fun activities may not be enough to offset the possibility of poor service and lax security.

Regardless of what some people may think, the desert is a beautiful place. The blossoming wildflowers in the spring are a joy to see. Spectacular sunsets delight the eye. Sometimes I go swimming. The occasional quail or roadrunner dart across the sandy roads. It is a unique experience. Here is an example of a paragraph that has a sentence that doesn't quite fit in. Try to find it!

"Sometimes I go swimming" has nothing whatsoever to do with the topic sentence that states that the desert is a beautiful place. Get rid of it! If you chose the correct sentence pat yourself on the back. Nice job!

Thank you for your attention and HAPPY PARAGRAPH WRITING!
