Agenda for today: 1 st : Library time (15 minutes) 2 nd : pronoun notes & activity—finish for homework if you do not finish in class. (15 minutes) 3 rd : return paragraphs with body biographies and feedback (5 minutes) 4 th : Use my comments to work on your paragraphs. (20 minutes) 5 th : Look at my example, on the next slide, of my paragraphs to help guide you.

Example of paragraph on Vinny-original paragraph-student example Vinny is a very ferful 15 year old boy. According to the text, “He was too numb now, too caught up in the insane thing he was about to do.” (page 10 lines 280-281) He was also very worried about his friends. “She has now fear. Vinny thought, no fear at all. Please, please, please, Starlene. I don’t want to see you die.” (page 7, line 157). Also, he is scared of heights. “He couldn’t imagine what it must feel like to be up there, especially if you were afraid of hieghts, like he was.” (page 7, lines 153-156).

Revised and Edited Paragraphs on Vinny Vinny is a fifteen year old boy Hawaiian boy who is full of fear and anxiety. He is at the ravine where a fourteen year old boy disappeared fifteen days ago. Vinny is not supposed to be at the ravine. His mother forbade him from going. According to the text his mother said, “Vinny, listen to me. Don’t go there. That pond is haunted” ( p. 7, lines 119-120). Vinny kept thinking about the danger and mystery surround the missing boy and his mother’s adamant request to stay away. He knew he should not be there, but his friends kept encouraging, and sometimes taunting, him, especially Joe-Boy and Starlene. They said, “Come with us anyway. You let your mommy run your life”(page 7, lines 125-26). Although, Vinny knows he should resist their peer pressure, he follows his friends. As Starlene goes to the top of the ravine and prepares to dive into the pond below, Vinny’s fear becomes palpable. The author states that Vinny thinks to himself, “She has no fear, no fear at all. Please, please, please, Starlene. I don’t want to see you die” (page 7, line 157). Vinny is a good and loyal friend. He doesn’t want to abandon his friends even though he knows that none of them should be there.

While Vinny continues to climb the ravine, despite his fear of death, his mother, and heights, he can’t help but wonder what the dead boy thought and felt. Vinny is a compassionate teenagerAccording to the text he wondered, “Had the dead boy felt this way? Or had he felt brave, like Starlene and Joe-Boy or Mo, who seemed to feel nothing” (page 10, lines 172-275)? The further Vinny propelled himself upward, he more his fear grew. Vinny’s salvation came in the form of a “voice, small and distant. Something inside him, a tiny voice pleading, Don’t do it. Walk away. Just turn and walk back down” (page 11, lines 298-299). Vinny learned that still, small, distant voice was his own courage telling him that he was brave. That courage allowed Vinny to simply walk down that ravine despite the hackling and taunting that his friends were sure to send his way toward his future.

In that moment, Vinny’s peace is present. He even sees the ravine and land around it through new eyes. The text states, “He’d never seen anything so beautiful in all his life” (p. 12, line 339). Vinny’s fear is replaced with courage, bravery, peace, and confidence.

Example of paragraph on Joe-Boy: student example Joe-Boy is a self assured 15 year old boy. “Hey Vinny, watch how a man does it.” (p. 8, lines 189-190) He also has a girlfriend, Starlene. “Vinny started to swim out toward Joe-boy, but stopped when he saw Starlene put her arms around Joe-boy and kiss him.” (p 6, lines106-107) He is also mean to Cinny sometimes. “You goin’ to let your mommy run your life, or what (p 7, line 124). Joe-boy is not a good friend all of the time.” You prob’ly stepping right where his foot was.”(page 4, line 20).
