4 Learning Goals In this workshop you will learn how to teach Spanish-speaking patrons to: Use internet browsers Set up and use email Use search engines Print from the Internet

6 Designing Your Internet Training for the Spanish- speaking patron

7 Instructional System Design (ISD) We will focus on applying this instructional model to train Spanish-Speaking patrons A model for determining the who, what, when, where, why, and how of training

9 Analysis Research who is your audience Research what they need to know Find out what they know/don’t know Community Based Organizations (CBOs) Chamber of Commerce other resources…. surveys (handout), interviews… pre-test (handout)

10 Design Define your training objectives Determine the content of your instruction what are you going to teach them? how much information will you include? what tools are you going to be using?

11 Development Develop your lessons and sequence of your instruction Determine the “instructional situation” include gradual instruction alternate demonstration and practice use engaging examples where: how: timing: computer lab online and printed materials short sessions

12 Implementation Determine the delivery of the training to Latino patrons date and time Determine training staff Accommodate your audience assistants and volunteers children and seniors

13 Evaluation Assess whether your training objectives have been met Assess the effectiveness of the trainer/facilitator Identify changes to the training setting and material have them perform the task solicit their honest opinion!! was your training effective?

15 Facilitation Tips Demonstrations While demonstrating: explain what is happening point to things on screen Make mistakes: experts have problems, too Ask questions to: verify knowledge get them thinking

19 Adult students are mature people and prefer to be treated as such Adults have needs which are concrete and immediate Adults are more impatient in the pursuit of learning objectives Characteristics of Adult Learners

20 They have useful past experience Adults enjoy applying their talents and knowledge in the learning situation They are sometimes fatigued when they attend classes Characteristics of Adult Learners

25 Facilitation Tips Delivering the Training Structure begin with a clear statement of the training content end revisiting all they have learned offer reassurance (opportunity to retrain) Make it easy to listen to you slow down - be mindful of multiple accents put enthusiasm in your voice and words Ask questions check with your audience repeatedly silence does not imply understanding

26 Exercise #2 Using Search Engines Develop a lesson on using Internet Search Engines Check your lesson against the Lesson Plan Teach your lesson to someone in another group Gather feedback on your lesson

28 Facilitation Tips Your Audience Working with your audience address your audience in a respectful manner “Señor”, “Señora” goes a long way… How they see you…the instructor culturally teachers hold a more elevated status for Latinos (dress for the occasion!) Allow students to participate willingly be sensitive…avoid singling out anyone

33 Facilitation Tips Opening and Transitions Start day off with the agenda Make people feel comfortable anecdotes, ice breakers, etc… jokes - humor make it casual but important Use clear transitions before we move on... to summarize... if there are no other questions...

35 Facilitation Tips Asking Questions Watch for “yes” or “no” questions “Qué preguntas tienen?” NOT - “Tienen alguna pregunta?” Wait 5-10 seconds Reply unconditionally Repeat the questions for the group

36 Keep Yourself Engaged It’s OK to make mistakes teaching computer technology is “unpredictable” Learn from your audience welcome all comments validate all input Have fun!
