Bailey MS Bands

Expectations for Students Bring materials for each class (instrument, book or BYOT, pencil, paper, agenda, and band folder). Practice 22 minutes daily (150 minutes weekly). Come to band tutoring if help is needed - Tuesdays and Thursdays 4:15 to 5:00. Have 4 reeds that have been played and are still in good condition. Should be kept in rotation. The instrument has to be cleaned and maintained. Complete a page in the theory book for each absence. Give it to Ms. P. to grade.

Required Materials Fundamentals of Music Theory - $12 Band Method Book ($9.50) OR a SmartMusic subscription ($40 paid on the SmartMusic site) Sound Innovations, Book 1 for 6th Band Expressions, Book 1 for 7th Band Expressions, Book 2 for 8th Concert Shirt ($23) Please always send money in an envelope with your child’s name on it.

About Your Instruments It is very frustrating to a student to have an instrument that constantly needs repair. The student gets behind quickly. Repair technicians will not touch certain brands. Rental insurance for rented instruments is not a scam. Homeowner’s Policy - add personal instruments. Instrument Insurance Company on CharmsOffice.

About Your Instruments Label the case. Put a tag inside the case. Percussion should label all parts including sticks. Students are allowed to drop off instruments in the band storeroom between 8:45 and 9:15. Students are allowed to pick up instruments at the end of the day so they are safe in the storeroom during the day.

About Your Instruments Teach your children not to let other people touch the instruments. Siblings should not be allowed to touch the instruments. Instrument Changes - CMS Policy: “All changes of instrumentation are strictly up to the Music Director.” You stay on what you play. Exceptions - instrumentation needs to be filled by the director such oboe, bassoon, bass clarinet, tenor sax, bari sax, F horn, euphonium, and tuba. Changes are made from similar instruments.

Practicing You made a financial investment by providing the instrument. There should be a return on your investment. Students need to reinforce the skills and concepts they learn in class. If a child is on a soccer team, he/she has to practice. The same goes for band. You only get out of band what you put into it. Parents need to be supportive by providing a good practice space. They should listen to their children play and give encouragement.

Practicing Practicing does not mean running through exercises and pieces of sheet music. It means reviewing concepts and breaking down hard parts into manageable chunks. The musician should be reflective and constantly listening. Recording oneself is highly recommended. Recordings can be done on CharmsOffice or SmartMusic.

Documenting Practice Time Every first class of the week, the students get out their agendas and write down the practice assignment for the week. The practice assignment is written on the Promethean Board each day. You can check on their practice assignments each week.

Where to Find the Practice Assignments www.baileymiddleschoolbands.weebly.com

Documenting Practice Time for a Grade Paper Log - Sign in pen and total the minutes in pen. (Use as a back-up to Charms.) SmartMusic - Add time on assigned practice reports. (Do not duplicate time on Charms or on paper.) www.CharmsOffice.com User Name = baileyband Password = Student ID # Do not duplicate time on paper or on SmartMusic.

How Much Time Should Be Spent on Practicing 150 minutes per week - 22 minutes per day = 100% = A+ (Each minute over 150 = 1 point of extra credit.) 135-149 minutes per week = 90% - 99% = A 120-134 minutes per week = 80% - 89% = B 105-119 minutes per week = 70% - 79% = C 90-104 minutes per week = 60% - 69% = D
