Peter Cornillon University of Rhode Island Presented at the 12 September 2003 NVODS Workshop Washington DC NVODS: Summary

Workshop Objectives 1.Thanks 1.Speakers 2.Participants 3.Worth 4.Ellis 5.Kim 6.Gale

Observations 1.OPeNDAP use in the meterological community outpaces that in the oceanographic community:  Because major data sets are consistently organized and described.  Shows what is possible when combining a data access mechanism with an analysis package when the metadata is in place  The AIS was designed to allow the oceanographic community to provide a consistent view to a broad range of data holdings.

Observations 2.Impacts on server sites remain a concern:  Security  Large requests 3.There continues to be a large proliferation of systems that do not talk to one another.  There appears to be a perception that once data are available via the providers web site the data provider has done what’s needed. 4.Technology is not enough

Observations 6.The NVODS effort has provided an extraordinary opportunity to learn about issues of importance to the development and operational implementation of distributed data systems. 7.Data systems of the future, especially in situ systems, will increasingly challenge ocean data systems of the future 8.We are in pretty good shape on gridded data types.

Observations 9.The OPeNDAP data model offers a great deal of flexibility; new “station” data type in GrADS- land. 10.Need groups to see the value of the underlying data transport protocol and adopt it for their use, building on it such as the COLA, PMEL, NOMADS and HAO groups have done. 11.DAP 4 specs are a very high priority 12.Need to advertise more broadly

Observations  Serve GIS data types  We encourage others to include in their proposals use and/or expansion of OPeNDAP/NVODS.
