ACE TESOL Diploma Program – London Language Institute OBJECTIVES You will understand: 1. Sensory preferences (visual, auditory, kinesthetic). 2. Multiple intelligences. 3. Implications of sensory preferences and multiple intelligences for language learning and teaching. You will be able to: 1. Integrate the theoretical knowledge of sensory preferences and multiple intelligences into your perspective on your profession and on your students’ language learning challenges.

ACE TESOL Diploma Program – London Language Institute LEARNING STYLES Learning styles have become a catch-word in education circles, as different ways to describe or classify, how different students learn. The implication for teachers is that, if different people learn different ways, then teachers must teach different ways, in order to accommodate the different learning styles. There are a number of different ways that learning styles can be differentiated or classified. These include sensory preferences, multiple intelligences, colours, field dependence/independence, left/right brain and ambiguity tolerance. In this module we will look at sensory preferences and multiple intelligences in detail.

ACE TESOL Diploma Program – London Language Institute SENSORY PREFERENCES The most well-known way to differentiate how people learn is through their sensory preferences—visual, auditory and kinesthetic. A fourth preference, tactile, can either stand on its own or be included in the kinesthetic preference. Visual learners learn by…. Auditory learners learn by…. Kinesthetic learners learn by…. What are some activities we can use for each preference? What are your learning preferences?

ACE TESOL Diploma Program – London Language Institute MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES Another well-known and useful way to categorize how people learn is through the idea of multiple intelligences. Researchers no longer consider there to be just one measure of human intelligence. Howard Gardner conceived of seven elements to human intellectual ability. Subsequent researchers added an eighth.

ACE TESOL Diploma Program – London Language Institute MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES Visual/Spatial Intelligence: strong ability to perceive and interpret information that is presented visually Verbal/Linguistic Intelligence: think in words Logical/Mathematical Intelligence: think conceptually Kinesthetic Intelligence: learn through interacting with the space and objects around them Musical/Aural Intelligence: think in sounds and rhythms Interpersonal/Social Intelligence: skilled at relating to others Intrapersonal/Solitary Intelligence: have an ability to analyze understand themselves in terms of their feelings, goals and interactions with the outside world Nature Intelligence: understand and relate to the natural environment

ACE TESOL Diploma Program – London Language Institute MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES Visual/Spatial Intelligence: Verbal/Linguistic Intelligence: Logical/Mathematical Intelligence: Kinesthetic Intelligence: Musical/Aural Intelligence: Interpersonal/Social Intelligence: Intrapersonal/Solitary Intelligence: Nature Intelligence: What are some activities that would suit each of the above intelligences?

ACE TESOL Diploma Program – London Language Institute MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES Take the test to determine your own multiple intelligences profile. http://www.bgfl.org/bgfl/custom/resources_ftp/client_ftp/ks3/ ict/multiple_int/questions/choose_lang.cfm REMEMBER TO WRITE DOWN YOUR CODE AT THE END SO YOU CAN RETRIEVE YOUR RESULTS LATER. DO YOU AGREE WITH YOUR RESULTS?

ACE TESOL Diploma Program – London Language Institute TEACHING STYLES As teachers, we have to be aware of our learning styles, because we often unconsciously teach the same way we like to learn. This then frustrates and penalizes the students who DON’T learn the same way we do. To be the most effective teacher, for the most number of students, we have to make sure that we have activities that fit each of the learning styles throughout each lesson. We have to have something for everyone, so to speak.

ACE TESOL Diploma Program – London Language Institute Complete Question 3 in the Task Journal (approximately 300 words, not 100). Task Journals can be submitted via email to paula@llinstitute.com (preferred) or printed and handed in. paula@llinstitute.com
