4 4 Business Ethics A business cannot claim to be ethical firm if it ignores unethical practices by its suppliers Use of child labor and forced labor Production in sweatshops Violation of the basic rights of workers Ignoring health, safety and environmental standards

5 Business Ethics ADVANTAGES Higher revenues Improved brand /business awareness Better employee motivation and recruitment New sources of finance – e.g. from ethical investors 5 DISADVANTAGES Higher costs – e.g. sourcing from Fairtrade suppliers rather than lowest price Higher overheads – e.g. training & communication of ethical policy A danger of building up false expectations

6 Six values commonly applied to medical ethics Autonomy - the patient has the right to refuse or choose their treatment.Autonomy Beneficence - a practitioner should act in the best interest of the patient.
