3 Purpose of this Session Communicate WAB's agreements and procedures regarding MS and HS Chinese Language and Literature pathways

4 MYP and DP Chinese Courses Ab initio (DP) – for students with little or no prior experience in Chinese. Language Acquisition (MYP & DP) - for students who are acquiring Chinese as an additional language. These students may have had some previous experience of learning Chinese. ( This course is organized as phases in MYP, and SL or HL in DP.) Language & Literature (MYP & DP) and Literature (DP) – for native speakers or students who have a very high level of competence in Chinese.

5 IBDP Chinese A: Language & Literature (HL & SL) For students who have completed the IBMYP Chinese language and literature course or who have completed Chinese Language Acquisition Phase 6. Helps students question the meaning generated by language and texts. Aims to develop in students skills of textual analysis and the understanding of texts, both literary and non-literary.

6 IBDP Chinese A Literature (HL & SL) For students who have completed the IBMYP Chinese language and literature course. It is a literature course and encourages students to appreciate the artistry of literature and to develop the ability to reflect critically on their reading. The response to the study of literature is through oral and written communication, enabling students to study and refine their command of language.

7 IBMYP Chinese Language and Literature For native speakers or students who have a very high level of competence in all aspects of Chinese language. Students explore and analyze aspects of personal, host and other cultures through literary and non- literary texts. They explore critical, creative and personal approaches to studying and analyzing literary and non-literary texts. They apply linguistic and literary concepts in a variety of authentic contexts.

8 IBMYP Chinese Language Acquisition Phase 6 (new) Will be offered in MS and HS beginning in August 2015. This course is for proficient Chinese communicators (part of Language Acquisition) and serves as a transition phase to MYP Language & Literature course.

9 Placement Procedures A clear, consistent and well-communicated system will be used to decide student placement within and across school sections. All placements will based on data and connected to course objectives.

11 Changing Paths Gr 6 students can move from Chinese Language & Literature (LL) to Language Acquisition (LA), without following the Team Forum process (transition year). Gr 7-10 students may move from Chinese Language & Literature on a case-by-case basis, following the Team Forum process.

12 Data Reviewed at Team Forum Teacher Collects Data Placement Concern Raised Decision Reached (based on a variety of factors) Team Forum Process

13 Team Forum Process: 1.The Chinese teacher collects data and asks for a team forum. 2.The Team Forum meets. Team Forum includes: Chinese teacher, Head of Department (HOD), Counselor, Curriculum Coordinator, and/or Principal/Assistant Principal. 3.A placement decision is reached. Placement will include many factors, such as language background, language exposure, teacher observation, performance and placement test. In 9 and 10, final exams will be used for verification for placement.

15 Parent Communication Chinese Language Pathways (currently in draft) will be available in WAB’s updated Language Policy, for clarification. Use of Chinese Language articulation charts (also currently in draft form) will be published to parents in June 2015. Parent workshops will be held in 2015-16 school year (with student work samples and assessment criteria).
