2 Setting In the story “Only You Can Save Man Kind” by Terry Pratchett takes place in 2 different areas. At first the story takes place in the real world during the gulf war. In the real world Johnny goes to School, hangout with his friends and plays the new game Only You Can Save Mankind. The story moves on to Johnny’s dream. In Johnny’s dreams he dreams about his game “ Only You Can Save Mankind”. In his dream it takes place in game space. there is a ScreeWee war, and Johnny helps the ScreeWee from being attacked from other players. Johnny’s dreams star becoming more than dreams.

5 Major: appears in the story most often and brings the story forward
Protagonist: The Good Guys C Johnny Maxwell Johnny is one of the major characters Johnny is also one of the protagonist . It started when he was playing the game “Only You Can Save Mankind”. When Johnny discovers their aren’t any ScreeWee (the aliens in the game) he stops playing the game. Johnny starts having dreams about the game. In the dream Johnny protects the ScreeWee (ScreeWee: Aliens from the game)from other players who attack the ScreeWee. Johnny's characteristics are smart, quiet, and nice.

7 Minor: Apears in the story in most events
C Wobbler Wobbler is one of the minor characters. Wobbler is one of Johnny's friends. Wobbler re- writes games. Wobbler rewrote “Only You Can Save Mankind” and gave the game to Johnny (Wobbler told Johnny he rewrote the game). Wobbler isn’t as much into video game like Johnny. Characteristics of Wobbler include Smart, Nice, Creative. Physical traits of Wobbler are black hair, long hair, White skin, and brown eyes.

8 This symbol represents Wobbler because Wobbler rewrites games which would make it piracy.

9 C Captain Zoom Minor: Apears in the story in most events Captain zoom is one of the minor characters. Captain zoom is the captain of the alien fleet called ScreeWee. In the story Captain Zoom and the other ScreeWee look like Alligators. Captain Zoom gets arrested for no reason. Characteritics of Captain zoom include smart and nice. A Picture of Captain Zoom. Protagonist: The Good Guys C Kristy Kristy first comes in the story in a dream Johnny has. Kristy is one of the minor and protagonist characters. Johnny calls Kristy and they were both surprised that they were real. Kristy and Johnny both had the same dream. Johnny and Kristy both team up to fight the people who attacked the ScreeWee. Character traits of Kristy include being a winning, smart, and competitive. Physical traits of Kristy include red hair, white skin, and blue eyes.

12 Antagonist: The Bad Guy
C The Gunnery Officer The Gunnery Officer is the Antagonist. The Gunnery officer doesn’t like the captain and he wants to kill all the ScreeWee. Characteristics of The Gunnery officer include selfish mean and smart. The Gunnery officer look like all the other ScreeWee because he is one. The ScreeWee look like Aligators.

P Rising Action A related series of incidents that build toward the climax Johnny gets a pirated edition of the new game Only You Can Save Mankind from his friend Wobbler so he can play with it. Aliens (The Captain Scree Wee) start communicating to Johnny by sending him text messages that appear on his computer screen. The text messages are saying they surrender. Johnny ignores the messages and keeps fighting the Scree Wee.

P Rising Action Cont. All the Scree Wee disappear from all the copies of the game which makes it just show regular space with no aliens. Johnny starts dreaming that he is in the game. In the dream he deals with the Gunnery Officer and talks with the Captain Scree Wee (Captain Zoom) Johnny becomes ill. Captain Zoom talks to Johnny while he is ill. They team up to fight the people who keep attacking the Scree Wee.

P Rising Action Cont. the ScreeWee fleet turns around and starts to fight back. Johnny finds out the captain gets arested The ScreeWee get a new captain. The new captain starts shooting at Johnny. Johnny still wants to protect the ScreeWee.

P Rising Action Cont. Johnny meets Kristy in his dream. Johnny remembered seeing Kristy at the video game store. Johnny goes and calls Kristy and she answers. Johnny was in a relief because he thought Kristy was not real. Johnny goes over Kristy's House. They talk about the game Johnny and Kristy had a different opinion about the game. Johnny wanted to protect the ScreeWee, Kristy wanted to kill the ScreeWee.

18 P Rising Action Cont. The Plan they mad was they were going to try to sneak into the starship. This picture represents the rising action because the ScreeWee surrendered to the humans which started everything and a white flag is a sign of surrendering.

19 The problem ; the turning point of the story.
P Climax The Climax of the story is when Johnny Collapse because he was tired and didn’t eat (this happened in Kristy’s house). This was the climax because Johnny dreamed him self in the ScreeWee starship. Johnny dreamed his self into the jail the Captain was in. Johnny and the Captain find the way out. Kristy dreams herself into the starship after that.

20 The problem ; the turning point of the story.
P Climax cont. When Johnny, Kristy and the Captain escape, they see an armed guard at the Captain’s cabin. The Captain couldn’t do anything because the Guard was under orders. Johnny steps out in the Corridor and the Guard See’s Johnny. Johnny puts his arms up high. The Guard didn’t shoot because he was amazed because the guard has never seen a Human in his life.

21 The problem ; the turning point of the story.
P Climax cont. When the guard was about to shoot Johnny, the door the Guard was guarding knocks, Kristy comes out of the door and breaks the Guard’s arm. They go to the bridge weir they find out the Gunnery officer killed a few ScreeWee’s and they find out people weir attacking the ScreeWee The Captain and the Gunnery officer get in a fight. Johnny and Kristy break up the fight. The captain got badly injured in the fight.

22 This picture represents the climax because if Johnny and Kristy never broke out the Captain the story would be taking a different turn.

P Falling Action The faling action of the story is when Johnny finds out how to read the controls ( He couldn’t read the controls because they weir all in ScreeWee writing). The way Johnny stated finding out how to read was all the controls weir in his head because it was his dream. This way Johnny can communicate and attack other players.

This plan would make the ScreeWee safe because humans cannot cross the border. Johnny and Kristy would have to leave the ship using an escape capsule. Before they left the ship they forgot to get rid of the Gunnery Officer. Johnny and Kristy go back to the room they last saw the captain.

The plan they had was Johnny was going to walk in the room and wait for Gunnery Officer to take him. Before The Gunnery Officer takes Johnny Kristy will shoot the Gunnery Officer. Johnny and Kristy find the captain while they weir waiting for the Gunnery Officer. The Captain was hurt badly because the Gunnery Officer beat him up.

Kristy drops the gun that was in her hand. The Gunnery officer goes toward Johnny. Before the Gunnery Officer can do anything to Johnny, Johnny shoots the Gunnery Officer and the Gunnery Officer dies. Johnny and Kristy run to the escape capsule with a little time to spare. Johnny and Kristy leave the ship before the ScreeWee ship croses the border.

This is a picture of the U.S and Canada border. This picture represents the falling action because if the ScreeWee never crossed the border they would have been in big trouble.

28 Conflict The conflict in this story was Man Vs. Man. One conflict in this story was when the Captain , Johnny, and Kristy escape and run into a guard, and Kristy surprise attacks the guard and breaks his arms. Another conflict is when there is a ScreeWee going down the corridors, Kristy was about to shoot the ScreeWee but didn't because it was the tea lady. the Another conflict is when Johnny shoots the Gunnery Officer because he was endangering the ScreeWee, Johnny and Kristy.

29 Theme The theme of this story is, take chances. This the theme because when Johnny shot the Gunnery officer he didn’t want to but he had to. Because Johnny killing the Gunnery Officer the fleet and the Captain reached the border. A quote from the book: “Yes, I shot him. I shot him. I wish I didn’t have to, but I had to. He was alive and now he isn’t.” (p.200) Another chance Johnny took was when Johnny stood right in front of an armed guard, which resulted in Kristy breaking the Guard’s arm. “Yes, I shot him. I shot him. I wish I didn’t have to, but I had to. He was alive and now he isn’t. (p.200) He stepped out into the corridor. … the guard raised the gun. Then there was a thunderous knocking on the other side of the cabin door. The guard made a simple mistake. She should have ignored the knocking… The door opened a little way … The guard swayed backward. Kristy came through thee door airbrone and started hacking at the guard’s arms with her hands. (p.159 & p.160)

30 Theme A quote from the book: “He stepped out into the corridor. … the guard raised the gun. Then there was a thunderous knocking on the other side of the cabin door. The guard made a simple mistake. She should have ignored the knocking… The door opened a little way … The guard swayed backward. Kristy came through the door airborne and started hacking at the guard’s arms with her hands.” (p.159 & p.160)

31 Resolution The resolution of this story is when Johnny defeats the Gunnery officer and leaves the ship with Kristy. This picture represents the Resolution because Johnny wakes up after he left the starship he woke up and felt that his life was different
