Literary Movements to Know Romanticism: a movement in the arts & literature that originated in the late 18 th century, emphasizing inspiration, subjectivity, and the primacy (importance) of the individual Gothic (late 18 th -early 19 th ): fantastic tales dealing with horror, despair, the grotesque and other “dark” objects. They were largely romantic since it was mostly imaginary, supernatural, and focused on the “weird.”

Literary Terms to Know Suspense: a state or feeling of excited or anxious uncertainty about what may happen. Point of View : the position of the narrator in relation to the story. What are the different points of view? How are they different?

Lit Terms Continued Mood: the emotional quality of a literary work. Basically: the words, subject matter, setting, rhythm and tone of a story all contribute to an overall feeling. Example: Think of an eerie house. What qualities would you give it to make it appear frightening? Paraphrasing: putting something into your own words Example: “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could.” Becomes: I had been putting up with Fortuato’s garbage for too long.

As We Read Think about perception vs. reality. What appears to be happening vs. what actually is happening. Also, please write down any questions you might have as we read. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqSIRsmu7DE

Film Adaptation What is an adaptation ? Def: a movie, book, play, etc., that is changed so that it can be presented in another form Example: When you watch a movie that doesn’t quite follow the storyline of the book you read. Authors may give us details, but we use our imaginations to fill in the gaps about setting, characters, etc. Screen writers must make these gaps visible in movies.

Short Adaptation As you watch this adaptation: Consider: 1. The setting – is it different? 2. The plot- has the screen writer/director changed it? 3. Is the story different on camera than you imagined? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwQ2fcqe5w0
