Spelling Spelling and Vocabulary Word Work Spelling Pretest: every Monday Spelling test: every Friday Each week, students work on a phonics-based spelling unit focusing on a particular spelling rule or pattern. The spelling wordlist consists : 15 original words (They are basic words that follow the weeks spelling pattern/rule along with site words that follow the same rule/pattern.) Challenge word list (Students who pass the Monday pretest are eligible for the challenge words. The challenge words also follow the rule/pattern but they are multisyllabic words.

16. New Common Core Report Card This year all schools will be using a brand new Common Core State Standards report card. The subjects and content your students will be assessed on are aligned to support the achievement of these standards. Students will now be assessed using a 1 – 3 grading rubric, with a “3” signifying a student who consistently demonstrated at standard work. You will be hearing more from our school throughout this trimester regarding our new Common Core Report Card. Copies can be found on the district website under the “Assessment, Research, and Evaluation department tab.

17. Homework New Board Policy to reduce amount of homework Is posted on the website every Monday as an electronic copy packet and is due back to class on Friday. Homework is good practice for study habits as well as providing reinforcement of skills taught in class. Please allow for 20-25 minutes to work on the homework packet every night. In addition, your child should be reading at least 20 minutes every night. Total homework time should not exceed 45 minutes. Additional research projects are also assigned throughout the year, but the homework packet is adjusted while students work on projects.

19. SRVUSD Volunteer Policy SRVUSD continues to use the Be A Mentor system for all adults who wish to volunteer on a school campus or drive/chaperone day and overnight field trips. This Volunteer Management System allows the school to know who has completed the process to volunteer on campus. ALL adult volunteers will need to go through this process. The District will NOT be asking parents to incur any of the costs associated with these clearance processes. If you were cleared last year, please get your new volunteer card from the office. http://www.srvusd.net/parents/volunteers

20. Classroom Parties We will celebrate three classroom parties this year: Halloween Valentine’s Day End-of-the-school year celebration. Room parents are the primary coordinators of the parties. They will seek help from classroom volunteers. For your child’s safety, siblings are not allowed.

21. Birthdays/Treats Due to food allergies, edible birthday treats are not permitted. Instead, we encourage you to: Donate a book to the Live Oak Library Gift baggies containing pencils, stickers, or other fun nonfood items or other fun nonfood items Donate rainy day board games. Please do not send invitations to the classroom.

22. Lunch Procedures Bring or purchase lunch Forgotten lunch may be dropped off in the office by 10:15am and picked up by your child in the “Forgotten Lunches” cart (inside of the MPR) Make sure lunch and snack bags are clearly labeled with your child’s name and room #. Lunches are $4.25. Visit LO website to load your child’s lunch cards. You may also pay by check, which must be placed in lockbox in office before 9:00 a.m. for money to be credited to your child’s account that same day. Please note that cash will not be accepted in the office or in the MPR.

23. Drop off Before School Teachers are on duty 15 minutes before and 15 minutes after a school day. Students may NOT be on the playground before 7:45 am. Also, no one is allowed to play on the play structure or use swings before or after school. Carpool drop off/pick up in the kindergarten area is not available to drivers dropping off students. If you would like to use the kindergarten parking lot please park your car and walk to the blacktop when dropping off or picking up your child. If you would like to carpool please drive to the front of the school to drop off your child.

24. After School Pick up Procedures Front dismissal is for carpool only! Please no pedestrian pick up at carpool!! Students in vanpool will meet their Vanpools in the Kinder area after school. Growing Room students line up by Kindergarten fence and are checked in by Growing Room staff. Walkers are escorted to class number (on playground) where they meet their parent/caregiver. Parents are not to meet their children at the front gate or outside of the classroom for safety reasons.

25. Carpool Dismissal We encourage you to carpool or walk with neighbors and friends now that our student population has reached over 1100. Students will sit near front gate and wait for their names to be called. Enter the main driveway in front of the school by the library. Drivers form a single line for pick-up at the curb in front of the school. Pull up as far as possible by the MPR. Be sure to display the family name placard on the passenger side dashboard/visor until your child is the car. Only use the cross walk that is supervised by teacher with a stop sign. Your EDFund donation will go towards: Classroom supplies (paper, pencils, art supplies, scissors, pencil boxes, folders, books, etc.), Field trips Librarian, Art Teacher, Music teacher, paraeducators If you have not donated yet and would like to, please see the office staff.
