2 Four Problems of the Respiratory System  1. Bronchitis – inflammation of the bronchi caused by exposure to tobacco smoke or air pollution –A buildup of mucus in the airways makes it difficult to breath

4  2. Asthma – inflammatory condition in which the trachea, bronchi, and bronchioles become narrowed making it hard to breath

7  3. Pneumonia – alveoli swell and become clogged with mucus. This decreases the amount of gas exchange –Symptoms include chest pain, fever, chills, and cough –Treated with antibiotic from doctor

8 Pneumonia  If alveoli are filled with mucus, gas exchange becomes difficult!

9  4. Emphysema – disease that progressively destroys the walls of alveoli –Difficulty breathing, chronic cough –Symptoms can be treated, but tissue damage is permanent –Almost always caused by smoking!

11 How to Keep Your Respiratory System Healthy  1. DONT SMOKE!!!  2. Avoid second hand smoke  3. Regular physical activity  4. Wash your hands frequently (this prevents infections)
