2 Catholic Church Leader of the church is the Pope in Rome 7 Sacraments (Baptism, Reconciliation, Holy Communion, Confirmation, Matrimony and Holy Orders) The majority of Christians who are in communion with Rome follow the Latin/Roman Rite A minority follow the Eastern Rites in communion with Rome

3 Anglican (Church of England) The Church was founded during the Reformation in England (1527-1603) under the influence of King Henry Three ordained ministries recognised – bishop, priest, deacon Anglicans acknowledge Baptism and Eucharist as the two great sacraments The Book of Common Prayer advises on faith, worship and the format of varying services The Monarch in England is the head of the church

4 Protestant Churches Refers to many denominations established as a result of the Reformation A majority of Congregationalists, Methodists and Presbyterians united to become the Uniting Church Baptism and Communion are celebrated as sacraments Liturgical practice varies from informal to structural

5 Presbyterians Traces their heritage to reformers such as Zwingli, Calvin and Knox They observe, Baptism and the Lord’s Supper Holy Communion is celebrated 4 times a year Ordained Ministers of Word and Sacrament administer sacraments and pastoral care

6 Baptist Emerged from English Congregational in 1609 Baptism and Communion are recognised as religious rituals but are non sacramental Worship tends to be informal with non-structured service The main emphasis is upon preaching Each Baptist church is responsible for itself Higher groups exist to coordinate activities between churches

7 Lutheran Established under the influence of Martin Luther during the Reformation Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are the two sacraments celebrated The book of Concord and the Bible form the basis of Lutheran faith and worship. Lutheran liturgical practice of formal worship is known as the Common Order

8 Eastern Orthodox Churches Federation of self governing churches who express unity through their traditions and beliefs Trace their heritage back to the Apostolic Church Share a lot of common ground with Catholics but are separated ecclesiastically and theologically

9 Eastern Orthodox Churches Ordained Ministries include: bishop, priest, deacon Priests may marry or remain single but those who do not marry are usually expected to become monks before their ordination Seven sacraments are celebrated with Eucharist being central to Orthodox life It uses a structured liturgical service which is complex and focuses on the Last Supper, and death and resurrection of Jesus
