FRIENDSHIP A THIRD GRADE EXPLORATION OF VISUAL IMAGES

BACKGROUND In the beginning of the year, I teach a unit about Friendship. During this unit, we explore several stories that teach about different types of friendship.

SOME STORIES INCLUDE… Rugby and Rosie by Nan Parson Rossiter: friendship between a boy and an adopted See and Eye dog (realistic fiction) Amos & Boris by William Steig: friendship between a mouse and whale (fantasy)

CONTINUED… The Legend of Damon and Pythias adapted as a play by Fan Kissen: explores how one friend is willing to give up his life to save his friend (Greek myth/play) Goodbye 382 Shin Dang Dong by Frances Park & Ginger Park: describes how a girl transitions from living in Korea to living in the United States, while exploring the issues involved in leaving old friends and making new ones (realistic fiction)

CONTINUED… Beauty and the Beast illustrated by John Palacios: looking at someone’s character, rather than appearance, when deciding to become friends (fairy tale) Teammates by Peter Golenbock: friendship of Jackie Robinson and Pee Wee Reese during the time of segregation (biography)

AND A CHAPTER BOOK… The Hundred Dresses by Michelle Higgins: young girl comes to terms with the effect that her and her friends’ teasing has on a shy classmate (fiction)

In addition to activities, discussions, and assessments already created, visual images from the Library of Congress can strengthen this unit!

TASKS… I have found a variety of photographs from the Library of Congress that depict friendship. There are 3 activities that I would do with these photographs.

ACTIVITY 1 1.Assemble students in pairs. 2.Give each pair a different photograph. 3.Each partnership should write a caption that best describes the photograph. 4.Discuss/Share as a whole group. 5.Ask students to discuss/share where they think this image would be found and why.

ACTIVITY 2 1.Assemble students in 6 small groups at different stations. 2.Give each group a different photograph. 3.Have each group examine the image, recording everything they see. Students should also discuss/record how the picture shows friendship. 4.After 5-7 minutes, students rotate to a new station to view a new photograph.

ACTIVITY 2 CONTINUED… 5. Continue until students have viewed all 6 pictures. (May divide activity over several days) 6. As a whole group, facilitate students to discuss what they saw. Steer them to notice similarities, differences, or common themes throughout the images. How do these photographs show friendship? How do they relate? Did you make any connections with any of the images?

ACTIVITY 3 1.Distribute photographs and writing journals. 2.Students respond to the following prompt: Imagine you are one of the people in the photo. Write a creative story that describes what is happening in this picture. Be sure to introduce us to your friend(s) in the picture!
