1 And what You as Citizens at Astor College can do for Dover

2  Objective – to learn about the importance of being a Citizen of Dover in the run up to the London 2012 Olympics  Research – Photos, Leaflets  Develop – Write a nomination for a student at Astor to compete to be a Torch carrier.  Achieve –For you to contribute as an active citizen to Dover’s Olympic ‘Pass the Passion’ work.

4 London last hosted the Games in 1948, and the Olympic torch arrived in Dover on its way to Wembley.

5 HH.M.S. Bicester, a WW2 destroyer of the Nore Command, was used to carry the Flame from Calais to Dover.

6  Chief Petty Officer and sportsman Herbert Barnes was the first person to receive it on British soil when it arrived in Dover

7  He handed it to a Dover butcher, Sid Doble. He ran with it through cheering crowds from the dockside before handing over to the next runner on the outskirts of the town.

8 Dover Dover successfully bid to be one of the towns that the torch travels through in 2012. The torch will be carried by different people through Kent to London for the Olympic Games.

9  We need to find 4 young people who will take it in turns to carry the torch through DOVER. PROUD  So the Citizens of Astor College and therefore of Dover need to stand up and show that they would be PROUD to nominate a student from Astor to carry the torch.

10 You need to write at least 150 words to explain why you believe a student of your choice at Astor should carry the torch. Have they inspired someone within your school to do something you never thought possible? Do they always try to be the best they can be? Do they make a real difference in their school or local community? Have they shown what it means to be a real friend? Do they show respect for other people and knows the importance of fair play?
