1 ExCEL After School Programs Elementary Lead Teacher Orientation 2012-2013

2 ExCEL After School Program The ExCEL After School Program three components include: 1. Academic Support, 2.Academic Enrichment, 3.Recreation/Physical Activities

3 ExCEL After School Program The goal of the ExCEL After School Program is to support the district’s goal of eliminating the achievement gap by adding value to the overall school program and assist the school in achieving its own unique goals as specified in the Balanced Scorecard/SPAA.

4 How do Lead Teachers fit in?? Integral part of the after school program by providing the link between the school day and the after school program

5 How provide the link? Liaise between the after program, school day staff and school day leadership team to ensure all are informed regarding after school program activities If needed, organize and facilitate regular meetings with Site Academic Leadership Team Collaborate with Site Coordinator Interact with parents, teachers, and school day staff to share information about after school activities Provide instructional expertise to strengthen the academic component of the After School program

6 What are the steps Review school site program summaries and relevant school data including Balanced Scorecard/SPSA Meet with site coordinator Determine where you can best support the students in the after school program by selecting one of the identified options Co-lead quality self assessment process to begin to plan for next year

7 Options to support After School Academics Option 1 – Homework Assistance: Review current After School Homework Assistance program structure and provide recommendations for improvements Develop and monitor Homework Assistance by developing a Student Support Worksheet for a minimum of 15-20 targeted students to assist them in improving homework success Monitor and communicate progress of homework success to ASP staff and school day faculty Option 2 – After School Academic Support: Using school data and afterschool enrollment lists, identify 15-20 students in need of targeted academic support Monitor and advise academic support identified academically struggling students in the after school program Maintain Academic Support Worksheet and track student progress for a minimum of 15-20 targeted students Create and maintain communication with parents, faculty, counselors and ASP Site Coordinator Option 3-School-Based Need If it is determined the above options do not fit the need of the ASP, the ASP Leadership Team (Administrator, Lead Teacher, Site Coordinator, etc) can determine the role of the Lead Teacher with approval from ExCEL.

8 Lead Teacher Planning Review After School Program Summary, School site Balanced Scorecard/SPSA and complete Strategic After School Plan by October 31 st, 2012 Complete the Strategic After School Action Plan End of Year Report with Site Coordinator Due Date for End of Year Report: May 17 th, 2013 Attend ExCEL ASP meetings Lead Teachers will spend a total of 85 hours per semester providing service (includes time to complete documentation) to the Elementary School After School Program. The service activities and documentation will be entered in the ExCEL Monitoring System (EMS)
